How long is a barrel good for on centerfire 17’s

I did not chase the lands on my .17Rem. I wished now that I did just to see how much wear the throat acquired as I shot it. I do check the throat wear on my rifles more often now. I wonder if by moving the bullet closer to the lands as I shot it if it would have made a difference in throat wear. It remained accurate and seemed to quit shooting overnight....I have heard that to keep accuracy it's advisable to keep the bullet in the sweet spot to the lands as the throat wears. I did not have to do that with my .17 as accuracy was always exceptional till the end.
Yeah - I find it interesting to see the results of various methods. I have never had a barrel that I found could be kept accurate by chasing the lands, though most of them are A/R's which don't allow a nice jam to start with.

My factory M700 barrel started going at about 1500 rds, almost all W760 and 25 gr bullets. Near 1800 I gave up and went with a Lilja. No colony, rapid shooting just hunting coyote/fox.

Well it seems that CZ put 9 twist barrels on there 17' Remington in 2003 so my assumption looks to be a mistake that they were 10's.
Odd that a 9 tumbled bullets at 1,000 rounds though.

Yeah 1:9 sounds correct. Looking at my notes, it started suddenly at about 550 rounds. After deep cleanings with all of the popular products, it would shoot straight for 10-15 rounds and then start tumbling again. I tried a different lot of bullets, different bullets, different powder. Gave up on that barrel.

I gotta think it was a barrel.problem.

That is some strange behavior.

I have had several 17 Rem barrels. The factory Remington barrel lasted 1500 rounds before accuracy became noticeably worse. Since then I have had two 1-9 Lilja barrels that both last between 1900 and 2100 rounds. The third Lilja was a 1-10 and shot exceptionally well, better than any 17 barrels before. For some reason it stopped shooting at 1000 rounds. Now I'm on my fourth Lilja. Used the gun for prairie dogs and coyotes, but never shot any of the barrels hot. No two pieces of steel are the same, so life of a barrel can vary greatly.

.17 Ackley Hornet is a great little centerfire cartridge. Not as hard on barrels as the .221 and .223 based .17 cals. Economical to load, fun to shoot.

I have a Remington 700 17 Remington that has over 1500 rds. All have been 25 gr and shot hot 4100 FPS. It still shoot as good as new. It has been shot so barrel was really hot one time shooting P.D. And groupings never opened up.

I thinking that when out shooting at time or two you must have got that barrel super hot to have that occur at 1000 rounds.
