PLEASE READ SCAM Sale Attempt on Hacked Account -- Beware!! LOOK and LEARN

Forum Boss

Administrator
Recently a valid user account was hacked, we believe with a shared password with another forum that uses an App that may not be secure. The hacker got in without changing the password, then changed the location and email on the account.

The scammer proceeded to offer a $2999.99 Vortex optic for $1800.00 with a deluxe ring-mount. We believe the photos were just grabbed off the internet.

Look very carefully people. I repeat -- look carefully at the Post-it pad with a name and date. But folks -- that notepad is FAKE -- put there with Photoshop. And the "writing" is actually a digital font -- it is NOT handwriting.

People -- the activity of scammers has escalated substantially in the last few months.

1. You must NEVER EVER purchase anything without a VOICE phone call. VOICE, VOICE, VOICE!
Then demand the seller's real name and address and run a check on the location and the phone he gives you. We suggest TruePeopleSearch.com.

If the phone has some kind of call forwarding (e.g. Google phone), be very suspicious. Ask questions about the seller, his shooting club, why he is selling. Listen for foreign accents. If the seller refuses to do a voice call STOP!!!!

2. NEVER EVER buy anything without a custom photo. That means something such as a red rope tied around the scope and the scope placed in a hat on top of a vehicle dashboard -- Things must be touching multiple places in 3D and the item must be photographed in a completely different location.

3. If the seller demands PayPal Friends and Family or Zelle, or Venmo F&F -- that violates our rules. HALT the sale, and notify Forum Boss immediately. Provide all the information you have so that we can notify law enforcement if needed. Friends and Family is NOT Allowed EVER -- Got that?! With F&F you will have ZERO protection as a buyer. We advise to never use Zelle for anything.

4. If the seller wants to sell a firearm or action with PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle -- that is 100% against the rules. Again, notify Forum Boss and the seller will be permanently banned.

If someone is offering a $3000 scope plus mount for $1800 be WARY!

URGENT Request -- If you have an old password, or if you use the same password on ANY other Forum, change your password TODAY!

The new password should be at least TEN characters with upper/lower case and special characters. Do not put ANY PART of your forum user name or your real name in the new password. E.g. a user named SixPPC should not have "six" or "ppc" anywhere in his new password.

IMPORTANT -- Write the new password down BEFORE you click send. We do NOT have access to your passwords so I cannot tell you what you used if you forget. WRITE down the password on paper and keep that securely.

Guys I need your help. I am now spending 3-6 hours a day on security issues.

Fight the hackers. Secure your accounts. Change your passwords.

I've never had anything but a sweet experience when using the marketplace here, or on other forums. But I'm pretty much a nickel and dime trader. I'd guess there still won't be much risk for the low stakes stuff, but when values get high, we'd better do as the boss says. jd

You can tell the Post-it Pad was photoshopped because the shadow is on the wrong side and the perspective is distorted. But the main give-away is the “writing” which is a uniform digital font.

When requesting a custom photo, you need something that touches the sale object front and back and the “setting” for the photo must be completely different.

Good God man, you must be some kinda "cybertective".;)

If these bozo's would spend half as much time working for a living as they do trying to steal their money -- they'd have more money. Fact is, they'd rather steal ten, than earn a hundred. jd

Another example just happened (allegedly)

Thanks for finding that. If you click the links in that thread you can see how photos were stolen and manipulated with photoshop. The price was lowered to $1200 from $1700.00.

Altered Photo (Original Words removed then Font used)

It looks like the bad guys are attacking multiple Forums. It appears the criminals are sharing account names and passwords…

Thanks for the heads up.

I DO NOT sale or buy anything on the Forum so if you see my handle (K22) offering to sale or buy something then it's a fake.
I'm not a big buyer/seller on this forum; but here, and on a couple other forums when I have done transactions, it has always been a great experience. And like gambling, I never risk anything that I can't afford to lose.

I'm not gonna let this change my behavior much, -- I changed my password as per the Boss, and I'm not going to be stupid -- well certainly not more than usual. I've done transactions where there is no money changing hands. I'd say those are a pretty low risk pleasure.:) jd

That's fine - it's not that I am concerned about getting scammed, it's just that I don't conduct transactions on the forum. I just wanted to alert the members if they see my handle selling or buying anything then it's bogus.

This rest was offered to me on another forum. He had me for awhile, but when i goggled the rest in images, the same pic came up on still another forum selling a year before. The post it note is photo shopped. Enlarging the photo shows a funny edge. It was a close one! he wrote just what i asked for.

FORUM BOSS: Beware Any listing with a note like that. Demand a custom photo with something placed AROUND the sale object and the item placed in a completely different location (e,g. ask this rest to be placed on a truck tailgate).

Never ever buy ANYthing without a VOICE phone call. Pick up the phone and talk!

In the above example, you can see this is Photo-shopped. The yellow note edge shadows are not right and the perspective is not right.

But guys WAKE up -- a custom photo means a DIFFERENT LOCATION with something physically touching the object.

If someone just pastes something new into an existing photo that is a dead give-away!!

Find out ALL the info you can about the seller, and then notify Forum Boss.

We just identified another hacked account today. We confirmed the user was hacked while using his phone with a password manager. We believe some of these password managers have significant vulnerabilities and/or the sneaky coders built in backdoors.

The scammer was attempting to sell a scope via PayPal friends and family. He contacted a guy with a WTB ad.

Folks, it is completely against Forum rules now for a non-silver or non-gold member to solicit a sale via a private message. IF non-upgraded member attempts to do this, notify Forum Boss immediately.

Luckily the potential buyer did an image search and found the exact same scope for sale on a different forum two years ago. So the scammer had stolen the pictures off another forum. He listed a phone number but when we called the number it was traced to a call center in Asia.

Good thing we have the HAWK watching these clowns.
