More crap I don't need: Vintage Sniper - M40 Edition.

Wow, looks great! I’m in the process of doing my own M40 for the CMP sniper match. Glad to see all the pictures your posting as it’s giving me a better understanding!

Bedding is the hard part for you? I struggled with it when doing a good bit of experimenting in my techniques. Now I found a method that works really well for me and gives great stress free results and isn’t overly messy or complicated.
Care to share some of your helpful ideas. .

It's not "hard" - The hard part is the prep and that's done. I'm still developing the eye for how much glue to use. I always use WAY too much, which makes cleanup a nightmare. I'm gettin there.
I use devcon and weigh the resin and hardener to get the ratio's correct but have also started recording the total weight used for each job. Like rem 700 repeater with pillars used XYZ and single shot long action used ABC worth if epoxy. Obviously it varies with how much clearance you have but it's been better than estimating.

Looking good! When I have concerns about the bedding flowing down the tops of the pillar holes, I epoxy a non flanged 5/16"-1/4" sleeve in the top of the pillar.

I ended up re-doing it, and also building one for a friend. I mixed in a bit of the fumed silica that comes with Pro Bed. It worked a treat. Slightly stiffer to mix, but it didn't droop/flow one bit.

Yeah...the fumed silica has its place. On stocks with lots of cuts for the mag, etc. and the cursed Model 70's, it can be a helpful aid. Sounds like you're getting the hang of the Pro Bed. :)

It's been my favorite so far. I'll probably get the cartridges/caulk gun.

Here's my personal one. Not CMP legal because it's a 722. This is one of my dads old actions that I did a full blueprint/sleeve, extractor job on. I'm excited to shoot it, once I pick a scope.

I might have a problem with handle on it though... It gets awful close to the scope when it's opened... Might need some handy work on that.

Will that scope mount pass CMP? I thought you had to have one of the originals or the Badger Ordnance repros...

They won't, no. We're doing load development with modern scopes. Will be the appropriate mount/scope for competition.

I know they like to keep it authentic... It's funny that a brand new Rem700 action from walmart passes muster but not a 722 thats literally pre-vietnam :D
They did not use the 722 Remington in Vietnam how could that ever pass muster? You might as well use a Terminus since it too wont pass since they did not use them in Vietnam. Pretty sure they also did not use Savage 110 actions in Vietnam.

They did use Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 style actions and Remington 700 actions. As I understand it they also continued to use the Sprngfield 1903 into Vietnam not that I am saying it passes for use in the sport your looking to compete in since again I did not research it.

I did not even research this but you could have spent less than 5 minutes on google researching this before you spent hours of machine time reworking your family Remington 722. Remington stopped producing the 722 in 1962 too less than 10 seconds to find that out. Even branches of the miltary that where purchasing new varmint rifles in Okinawa early on would not have purchased a used 722 at a sporting good store since those had been off the market for a while by than!

It is great that you can do the needed machine work but you have to fall with in the rules before anything else matters! That means actions, stocks that fit inthe box, weight, trigger pull weight, barrel length, barrel profile, safety that works etc... Every detail has to fall with int he rules and pass inspection so you get a sticker for your gun and a target.

Nothing wrong with trying to use what you have on hand but always read the rules 3 times and high-light everything that pertains to the class you want to shoot in!

Have a breath homey. I was only saying it's more era correct than a brand new 700 from 2024. I didn't say it got used in the nam, which perhaps you're having flashbacks from.
He is not old enough to have been in Nam.

There is some evidence or perhaps conjecture that the 721 was used by GI's on a limited basis. It's been a long time since I read that and don't remember where. It may have been on the Gunboards forum.
