This was in a box of random shotgun shells I received. Anyone familiar or may have a guess to it's era as I haven't a clue. Rem-umc No 12 Shurshot. Just curious on a Sunday morning.

Paper or Plastic?

A bit of update: 1963, Remington started producing a green plastic shell with the Shurshot name. It was stuffed with the old style fiber wads. The SHUR SHOT hull did not get the POWER PISTON wads until 1966.

I have 2 and 1/2 boxes of high brass #6s that had been duck hunting so many times the owner didn't trust them anymore. There was over 3 when I got them, all have been 100% sure fire. They are so old they are paper cases.

pry open the crimp.

It looks like an early plastic to me. The paper ones had a different crimp and/or a roll over a paper board

Reload….no way factory crimp looks that sloppy.
That would look good for me . I'll crack it open one day if I get home with enough time and we'll see what's inside. I've got an old high brass purple papers shell of some kind and they feel similar. Google seems to come up with era from 20's to early 60's.

That is an early rem plastic I have one in my hand as I write this. The side of the shell is marked Rem express kleenbore long range the end of the shell has a round disc glued to the factory crimp showing shot size. I also have a few paper factory shells the exterior of the shell is smooth and has a waxed texture. The paper are from the mid 50's and the Rem are mid 60's they were from when my Dad went pheasent hunting in South Dakota back then. hope this helps. Also that is not a factory crimp

Sure looks like paper to me as my thumb nail ripped part of it. No writing on it except Shurshot on casehead. Looks like there was a purple stamp of some kind on the crimp at one time but maybe that's where it rode crimp down on something.

Kinda feels like paper to me. Not 100%. Is there a way to tell for sure?
Its waxed paper and circa 1960's, the older paper shells were smooth not ribbed. If I remember correctly Remington had a patent of the paper ribbed case. I have a bunch of boxes put away. I have hundreds of them and have shot and reloaded 1000's of them over the years, especially when I was a kid my dad had many 1000's of them. I love loading paper shells, if they are in good shape they are a joy to load and smell the best on a nice cool morning hunt! Those surest when new came with a round piece of orange paper glued over the crimp with reddish purple wax, and it listed the charge weight and size of shot.

It's paper, just hold it over a candle real quick you will see the wax in the paper come to the surface. I have 8-9 new boxes of those put away, they have printed on the " REM Shurshot patented Ribbed Casing" or something to that affect. I used to take my paper cases that had gotten damp or were weathered and stand them on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven on low heat and it would bring the wax back to the surface and they where like brand new and would be a joy to reload and crimp even better.

In fact I just so happen to have a couple sitting on my counter, these are a bit older, you could tell by the decorative embossing on the side of the high base brass head, also this 16ga was a Nitro Express not a shut shot, the Nitro was a line of there hottest high base and magnum shells, it was their top of the line and developed into their Nitro mag line. The shurshot was the feild loads for pheasant and doves, lite duck loads. You can also tell this one was older by the rollcrimp instead of the star crimp on yours. The other two are .410 and are smooth paper #6 shot as seen on the paper disk and were Express loads.IMG_7853.jpegIMG_7851.jpegIMG_7854.jpegIMG_7855.jpeg
