Explosion while reloading smokeless powder

A random ”report” from a “neighbor” states no gas in that neighborhood, not no gas lines. Propane is a gas, the home might have had a big gas bottle outside supplying the water heater, stove etc. and a leak can develop inside the home just like a commercial natural gas line.

A local print shop had a big explosion last summer, several folks were inside when the event occurred so an explosion can happen even with people close inside. Clearly enough power to turn the home to rubble…

This could be the beginning of a campaign to outlaw reloading by the fanatics.
Just wait! It will be described as an “unlicensed ammunition factory” or “ underground munitions lab”!
Exactly what I was thinking as I started to read this thread!!!

I think everyone here has probably tried the "I have little flecks of miscellaneous powder on the bench, I'll gather them and light them outside" experiment.
Without a way to build pressure in a closed container, it just fizzles.

How many times did they repeat it?
The test results document the occurrence of detonation in each ofthe four test shots. The
highest velocity of detonation (VOD) was recorded at 25,641 fps and the lowest at 19,048 fps.
The average VOD of all tests was measured at 21,282 fps. This is especially significant when
compared to the known VOD of common high explosives and their TNT equivalency (Appendix
M). 39 Trinitrotoluene, most commonly referred to as TNT, is the recognized standard by which
explosives are compared - expressed as TNT relative equivalency (RE). The values shown in
Appendix M demonstrate VOD is a significant factor in determining the RE of a given explosive.
TNT detonates at velocity of22,600 fps and represents the standard RE value of 1.00. RDX, the
material used to make the military explosive C-4, detonates at 27,400 fps and is assigned an RE
value of 1.60. Ainmonium nitrate detonates at 8,900 fps and is assigned an RE value of 0.42.
The test charge can be assigned an RE value ofjust under 1.00 using VOD as the lone

The USA & Canada did testing. Canada had a long list of smokeless* powders that will detonate.

Looks like our Gov was thinking, an Explosive License should be needed to purchase smokeless powder.
Luck for us, Didnt happen. (Yet)

I stopped selling Black Powder, years ago, because of this & needing a special powder magazine on wheels, so it could be wheeled out of building.

persons engaged in the business of importing, manufacturing, or dealing in black powder in any quantity must have a federal explosives license, and comply with recordkeeping, storage and conduct of business requirements.
