R.I.P., Mr. Keith.
Dozens of different cancer types and their various causes. Lots of different individuals, with various genetics and histories and environmental (air, water, food, 'stuff') exposures. And only ~20yrs since the human genome was documented. (Still don't know what all of those "switches" do, nor most of their interrelated actions.) Lots of good progress so far, but it's only been 20-ish years. 100yrs from now, I suspect that a good number of valid and effective treatments will be commonplace ... for some cancers. Others, I'll bet it'll take awhile, if ever. In short: they're workin' on it.
We still don't really appreciate how impactful a healthy gut microbiome can be for the body. We still don't fully appreciate how utterly truthful the "you are what you eat" mantra is, as to how specifically to alter one's intake to get a given result. In short: they're workin' on it.
My own major issue stems from muscle injury many years ago. Until the day dawns when nearly-complete regrowth of muscles can be done, there's nearly nothing I can do about it. You guessed it: they're workin' on it. Some enlisting of the body's own stem cell mechanism to correct a portion of such damage, in some people. But, as with cancer, we're a long way toward an everyday, commonplace "waving of a wand" type treatment that'll get rid of the problem.
I hope some very solid improvements in these areas might occur within my lifetime. But I won't hold my breath. In the case of cancers, the tenacity of those living cells is as great and terrible as the rest of the body's cells. Perhaps medical science can find "the key" in some instances ... eventually.
Why in the H*** hasn't Cancer been defeated?
