What do I have?

I just picked up a 700 Varmint in 22-250 from an estate at the LGS. No original box. It's in a laminated stock that looks like the VLS stock but is a more olive color than other Rem. laminates I've seen, with a black Remington pad & black grip cap. The rifle is an all stainless BDL with non fluted 26" barrel. Crown is not recessed. Date code is EW, so Oct. of 2001, I think. It has an S prefix & 7 digit serial #. There is a J-lock, & yes, it binds terribly inside the bolt. A single line of text on the left side of barrel... "Remington Arms Company Inc, Ilion NY 22-250"

Going by V for varmint, LS for laminated stock, & S for stainless, I was thinking it was a VLSS, but all all the VLSS I can find have thumbhole stocks with vented forend slots under the barrel.

Any ideas on what it is?

Anybody have a prefernce for a Gre-Tan or PTG or ??? firing pin assy. to replace the J lock mess?

There's also an unknown after market trigger. No name was visible anywhere when I had the action out of the stock. There's a bottom safety inside the trigger guard on the right side that pivots way down for safe. Bolt release is in the usual place. It seems like a decent trigger that breaks between 5-6 oz. maybe or maybe not a tad light for groundhog hunting. Not sure if I like the safety either.

Any ideas what trigger it is?

Google is not my friend. New stuff for sale is all I can conjure up & this stuff is old enough to buy beer or a handgun.

Thanks for any help.

Camera's on the fritz, so pictures are problematic.

Gonna be very hard to help you out with no pics.

Out of 3 questions the one that really might need a picture... the trigger, was answered in the 2nd post. Without removing from the stock again, if the spring setup & the safety lever is unique to Jewel it looks like the unknown trigger is a Jewel. Thanks Josh.

Still wondering which firing pin assy. is the preferred replacement for the J-lock. PTG, Gre-Tan, or maybe something else? Not sure how a picture would help with this one, but it looks a lot like this.

This is what the rifle looks like, except the the action, barrel, & bottom metal is stainless as stated in the original post. Was the stainless version a separate model designation from the VLS pictured below? Maybe there never was a stainless varmint laminate in 2001 & the original owner swapped stocks? I dont really suppose it matters all that much. Just curious.

Below is the VLSS. This is NOT what the rifle looks like, but all Google shows for 700 varmint stainless laminated.

I’m not an expert on all the different Remingtons but the trigger is one of my favorites. You should try it for a while before replacing it. The bottom safety takes a little getting used to but once you do, it’s easy to use. They allow more bedding area to remain at the rear of the action.

My date code chart says Oct 2002. IIRC the "S" code on the receiver stands for stn. stl. Nothing is adding up as I believe the J-lock came sometime after 2003. There were not many stn. stl. varmint barreled actions offered in 22-250 and none of those were non-fluted. The green laminate could be "forest camo" variation as offered by Boyds and others, but I have only seen Remington offer Brown and Black/ Gray laminates.
As is, it is the way I would have ordered a 700 VLS-SS (hate the thumbhole and gimmick Buick vent holes) except for the J-lock and it having a magazine as I am a die hard ADL guy. Very nice find.
