SS Stiller Viper Mag Bolt

I have my beloved Stanless Stiller Viper action, and i have moved on to Magnum cases for F Class. The one issue i have is that my Viper is a Standard bolt face and i would like to get a Magnum for it, I have reached out to PTG about a bolt, but still waiting on response, are there any other options out there for a Mag Bolt for this action?

Just a guess as I've not tried it, but a Panda bolt might be able to be fitted to it. I say this only because they are very close. There may well be something that prevents you from doing so, that I simply don't know. If the bolt will work and time to the action, fitting a bbl to it should be easy. I bet you know someone with a Panda that would be happy to let you try it in your action.

Yeah I have a couple pandas as well, just wasn’t sure if there is something I’m missing. With my luck it can’t be that damn easy!! I should have to fly around the world 3.26 times, stand on fingertip's, and lord only knows what else to get this to work. I hope it’s as easy as that!

I'd be curious what you find and what the difference is, if any. They both share the same headspace dimension for coned bolts. It might be doable even if there is a small difference somewhere, too. I would not assume bbls will interchange, but they might. Just check that stuff or have a good smith look them both over.

I originally set out to start F-Class with that action but it never materialized and I have Surgeon XL’’s instead. I know how you feel about the Viper as I feel that way about the Surgeons.

On my XL’s the only difference between the magnum bolts and the Lapua Magnum bolts is that the opening is slightly larger and the extractor piece has as thinner claw for the larger head.

So I would imagine that the bolt you have could be opened up, although it’s a one way street. Now it would be a magnum.

As an aside, I have always wondered what the real world effect or potential downside is of running a bolt head that is a size larger than the case head, in event of unavailability of the proper size bolt but access to an extractor that would allow it to be done. The bolt head’s rim doesn’t make much actual contact with the case at all, if any, at the widest diameter, and most cases taper immediately.

Check with Curtis Helton. He was the last man standing at the "old" Stiller mfg. He still has some of the old Stiller actions and might have a bolt??? IF not he might be able to modify your bolt or help you out with info on getting one, he was the manufacturing guy when they broke up.

Hi David I had Stiller build me 3 magnum bolts for my Stiller Viper SS in 2021 they turned out really nice. Austin
I have a Viper SS with PPC/308 bolt face from the Jerry/Curtis days and have tried to find a bolt with a 223 face-----no success.

I tried a Panda bolt with 223 face----this particular bolt would not work with my particular Viper SS
action----not to say that it can't be made to work.

Good luck.

Do you know what was different about them? Mostly to satisfy my own curiosity.

I emailed Stiller, they told me they quit making those actions and parts in 2015, and when they sold out of the parts they have no more and will not be making any, so Stiller is out! I am waiting on Curtis to get back from out of country and I will talk with him then.

Seems to me, you’d be money ahead to buy a bat, w/ 2 bolts & rebed the stock…

Sell the stiller, since ya can’t get anything for it..

I have a client who has a. Stiller Viper .308/.484 bolt for sale. He switched to .223 bolt face years ago for PDs and never used the .484 again.

The .484 has no ejector.

He paid $535 for the .223 bolt.

Appears that the .484 bolt should still be worth that considering they're no longer available.

I've actually counseled him to I keep the .484 with the action but he's wanting to sell it.

If you or someone else is interested let me know via PM.

Rick M.

Mike, unfortunately, I'm not up on many details on comparing Viper/Panda actions.

Its very obvious that the tenon breech angles vary by 1 deg-----Panda angle 30 deg
and Viper angle 29 deg. All other tenon dimensions are the same.

We've interchanged Viper and Panda barrels with no problems----so much for
the receiver/barrel interface.

I haven't talked to anyone with a reasonably priced method for interchanging bolts.

Maybe this interchangeability is just not worth the cost.

Will your Panda bolt fit and cycle in the Viper?

The Panda bolt was not mine. I was allowed to use it for comparison.

The bolt would not enter the receiver ----much less cycle. I knew this was
way above my skills and continued looking---eventually found a 222 on a
Bat SV action, a very good rifle.

This is about all I know and then some. Next ??

How did the interchanged barrels shoot in the other action????
