What is optimum barrel length for 100-200 yards competition

Back in Jr High School, my Math teacher, taught me to "Round Off" to, WHOLE Numbers, so I went from, a measly, 21 3/4" Barrel to, a full, 24 inches for, a little, EXTRA, Speed, in my 6 XC, just, B'cause,.. I could !
And StaBall 65, really LIKES that, extra couple of, inches
really LIKES that, extra couple of, inches- My biology teacher said she would like it too..

Most barrel makers allow 28-31 inch at no additional charge. Get the longest your barrel maker allows at no extra cost. This gives your gunsmith more options and you can set it back as well.

Get a barrel with some taper. Even I do not go straight cylinder most of the time due to weight and rules. Plus straight cylinders look as ugly as ugly get's a rifle should look sexy and straight as a 2x4 is not sexy on a woman, boats, planes, rifles, or cars curves and tapers!!!

You definetly want the rifle to be as heavy as the rules will allow. You will have to ballance weight with barrel, stock, optics and rings. Again a longer barrel with some taper gives you far more options!!

Since your using a bipod there is no reason not to build the rifle to the limit of weight alloance! Just like you would never want to hump a 20lbs. rifle up and down a mountain you likewise would not want to show up to a BR compeition with a 6lbs. rifle!

Update:

I finally built that rifle! It’s a 1:8 Bartlein barrel finished at 580mm, MDT Xrs stock.

I had today my first range session. Didn’t do any load development, just doing some break-in.

I used my ammo from another 6BR rig- 30gr of N140, 105gr Hybrids, BR4.

The shooting was done off joypod. First 5-shot group at 100m below.br3.jpg

Bartlein Barrels don't need to be broken in as you can see.
Or any quality SS match barrel maker as far as that goes.
In my case break-in refers to polishing the chamber/throat area to eliminate any marks from reamer job perpendicular to rifling. I recall John Krieger mentioning that in Erik’s podcast.

Also Bartlein barrels confirms there is some merit in this process:
„For the most part, the only thing you are breaking in is the throat area of the barrel. The nicer the finish that the finish reamer or throating reamer leaves, the faster the throat will polish/break in.”

My break-in process took 5 rounds in total. And after that I produced the group above. Next time I will do some shooting off rest.

Much of that break in is to give shooters something to do.

Note: this is on custom made match rifle barrels. Not off the shelf at Walmart. Where some shooting and cleaning would be helpful.

How long is a piece of string?
