What would shoot noticeably better than my T1x?

Best accuracy for your buck might be an old single shot Anschutz Match 54 or BSA Martini International target rifle. Although they might be 50 years old, given the right ammunition, they will still keep up with any of the more modern offerings.

I scored an early 1980's Walther KKM on Gun Broker for $800, added a Weaver T36 and Harrels Tuner. Added a bag rider and I can stay with the other Annies and custom jobs at 50 yards and even at 100 in the wind. For benchrest you need some kind of bag rider. Or send Anchutz $5,000+ for one of their benchrest rifles and there you are.

So I'd be looking at an Anschutz, Vudoo or Rim-X?

Would the Vudoo and Rim-X both drop in to a Rem 700 based chassis?
It depends on which bottom metal you use. I own a RimX and bought Hawkins Precision bottom metal put it in a Remington stock and found that I needed to inlett and glass bed for the bottom metal. The tangs on the bottom metal were a little different than Remington. I went ahead and glass/epoxy bedded the action to the stock at the same time.

I've been shooting my 16" T1x for about 18 months. I've swapped out the trigger spring, put it in a KRG Bravo stock, and it has an Athlon Midas Tac scope.

I don't hunt, and I shoot off a bench at 50 and 100 yards. At 50, if I shoot 5x5 shot groups, they'll generally average .45-.5". That's with Center-X. With SK Std+, they open up a touch.

I'm happy with the rifle, so it's not that. But I'm about to have some surgery that will keep me from shooting my centerfire rifles for awhile. So, when I can get back to shooting, I thought a new .22 might be fun.

So, what would I have to spend to get something that would shoot better than my Tikka? And this last 18 months is the totality of my rifle shooting experience. So I don't really know what a really nice rifle is capable of, or what I'm capable of, for that matter.

this guys rifle would shoot better than your Tikka

I've got three Vudoo V22 repeaters, a Vudoo Three-60 repeater, and a couple of V22S single shots, all but one of which I barreled myself with Krieger, Benchmark, & Shilen select match ratchet blanks. The repeaters are all chambered with an EPS reamer, and the two V22S single shots are chambered with a Nevius reamer. The one repeater than I didn't chamber was purchased as a bbl'd action directly from VGW with a 22" Bartlein in VGW's Kukri profile. There are days when I can get really impressive 50yd groups out of any of the repeaters, but the two single shots are consistently tighter-shooting than any of the repeaters. I don't presently have the time during the summer months to shoot 22RF BR matches - still farming, working alone, and just can't plan on taking off on a weekend for a BR match that may require a day's drive to get there. So nearly all my shooting is done here on my own range.

It's not that I haven't shot any competition - in the past, when Dad was still alive and able to cover for me if I wanted to take off to go shoot matches, I shot a lot of XTC & prone Hi Power, and managed to get my Distinguished Rifleman Badge, along with NRA high master classifications in XTC, Mid & Long range prone. But that was then, and this is now - and I've yet to take the V22S that I have set up for BR shooting to a BR match. I do have a good supply of ARA targets, and have shot a number of them while having the V22S in a PQP one-piece joy-stick rest. Not saying that I'm a great shooter, just mentioned all this as a frame of reference to give an idea of my rifle shooting experience. I've also had a long standing relationship with VGW (bought the 1st repeater from them in 2017), and have good confidence in the rifles they turn out.

Hi Dennis, what kind of scores are you putting up on the ARA UL targets? just curious really. It's kind of irrelevant since we're both shooting at different ranges in different conditions, etc. I like to hear how others are doing

Not sure what all your getting at that price. I bought my RIMX action (including 1 Mag. and a no go gauge) for $1,175.00 from ALTUS Shooting Solutions.
Yep. Just looked them up, $1150. That's what happens when I try to remember too much

That's still almost twice what his Tikka cost.

I have had quite a few of the older target rifles as well as a lot of sporters. I have a Tikka that is super accurate and I have done little to it. If staying in that $1k range a 54 anschutz would be my choice. Great trigger, stock and amazing shooter. If spending more then a custom would be the choice. That area is wide open.

One of my local shops has an old 54 Anschutz for $1100. For a great shooting complete rifle that is hard to beat but cheaper ones are out there if some searching is done.

I don't think I've shot anything better than 2200. Not that the rifle's not capable, but I have yet to learn how to move from one bull to the next without screwing up. And I don't recall ever shooting on these ARA targets when there was less than 9-10mph wind. Need to buy or build myself a good set of wind indicators and learn to use them...

2200 on the UL target is actually pretty good. Moving bull to bull certainly makes it interesting. I know what it's like to constantly deal with the wind.

Just as a matter of interest, I gave my old Annie M54 an airing for the first time outside at 50 yds this year.
I tried five different types of ammunition that I had at hand. It was fairly calm but only just above freezing.
Not in any way a scientific or exhaustive test, no different lot numbers, no wind flags, wobbly table and only a couple of five shot groups of each type.

Might put a tuner on whatever you pick. This will let you adjust the tune a little since you can't adjust the ammo.

I used to shoot a lot of rimfire but when you start shooting top end ammo and rifles you could be shooting 223 or other small centerfire.

I have a T1X with a Jard trigger and it shoots well with anything I've fed it. IMHO it's the best .22 rimfire for the money on the market. Having said that I also have an Anschutz 1712 that out shoots it, and for the money it should, it's an apples to oranges comparison. When you start talking target rifles it turns into an apples to watermelon comparison.

I don't particularly like to judge my rifles by group size. Instead shoot five A-17 targets, each target has ten scoring bulls and two sighters. Each bull gets one shot for a total 100 points possible per target. Shoot five targets at 50 yards. My Anschutz has shot 493/500 in a sporter match on this target using SK Standard Plus.

For fun plinking or squirrels I grab the Tikka.

BTW, I like the Jard trigger on the Tikka better than the trigger on my 1712.

Something's wrong there. Unless it's just a single stage vs two stage preference. I have both and the trigger on my 1712 is way better. I also took the time to get it adjusted properly

I will say that the factory T1x trigger is one of the best factory triggers I've had. Maybe not the lightest but with a spring change it's reasonably light and crisp. It's a very nice factory trigger

Finding a rim fire that shoots well is sometimes an organic process/luck. I think if you stick with a platform that has options with aftermarket triggers, barrels, stocks and gunsmiths will help with getting something that meets your expectations. I have a old (1407) 1973 Anschutz 54 Match club rifle that shoots scary good. I purchased it used thinking I was going to rebuild it because it looked terrible when I purchased it. I just wanted the action. I cleaned it up and added some odds and ends (1813 Super Match Stock) and it shoots great! I got lucky.

I messed with the 1712 trigger and couldn't get it to my liking. The Jard on the TX is a nice upgrade.
