Not many people are so competitive that they compete to see who had the most 1,000 yard Prarie Dog kills. But these two nuts did.

2009…. Holly , Colorado… doc had joined the 1K club the previous year in Murdo, SD. So, First day in Holly I made the club at noon with a 1100 yd Kill.
107 with a 8 twist barrel. Took several shots to make the kill so I was prepared to change barrels on the fly. I clamped my barrel vice to my heavy shooting table and I switched barrels on the Mike Bryant Viper Dasher. I put on a 7.5 twist barrel to shoot the heavier 115 Berger.
That evening late the wind settled a little and I decided to give it a try with the higher BC 115 Bullet.
This time it only took 5 or 6 shots and I was ecstatic. Day 1, 2, 3 , 4, we both had 1,000 yd kills.

Going into the 5th and final day I thought we were finished with the long shots and that Thursday night I did not load any heavy bullets , only 70 Nosler BT’s. The 5th and final day I was coasting and relaxing shooting out to 600 yds with the 70 Nos BT.
About 4:00 in the afternoon Voldoc began stretching out and took a 4 to zip lead on me on 1K kills. Well not to be out done I pulled my reloading press out of the trailer, mounted it on my heavy shooting bench and loaded 20 rounds of 115 Bergers for the

Doc Stone , JR Joseph Carter, and John Kruzan were spotting me. Targets past the 1,000 yard fence were plentiful
12 shots later I had my four 1,000 yd kills to even the score at four apiece for the last day. When I evened the count with Doc , I said that’s it, load up and let’s go home. The fat lady had sung.
On Wednesday we had a very flat spot that we could not range out around 1,000 yd so we drove the truck out to a spot and lazered back to the PD trailer and stuck a flag up at thde 1,000 yard mark. Late that evening the wind died down some but the sun was getting low and very few dogs were out. I did find a couple out past the 1,000 yard flag but it was so flat we could not range the distance (today we have better range finders). Voldoc and JR Carter were spotting me . I believe I was using a NF NXS 12 x 42 Double D reticle. First shot was what looked to be a half way between the 1000 flag and the dog. I cranked up to the top of my elevation adjustment. Next shot was much closer. Next shot I used the top end of the line below the main center dot. Still closer but a little short. Bottom of the line above the lower dot looked like it would be about the right hold over. Sure enought the next shot hit just a foot or so in front of the dog. I had the windage dialed in. Next I used the same aim point but held top of his head. Landed just right of the dog. He is standing now lookin around like where did that dust and noise come from. About 2 or 3 shots later the dog dropped down. We watched for movement. In a few seconds the other dog that was a few feet away ran over to smell and then jumped on the dog I shot at. We knew then that the visitor smelled blood and I had my Kill. Now to find the dog because we wanted to range it, We left JR at the bench looking through my scope at the dead dog and left JR a walkie-talke. Doc and I got in his Tahoe with a walk-talke and drove toward the horizon with the sun in our eyes. I had put a towel over my head and scope to try and keep sun out of my eyes. We got to the 1,000 yard flag and kept driving. JR said keep going. He talked us right in to the dog. We ranged back to the 1,000 yard flag and it was 394 yards to the flag makin the shot total 1394 yd. So excited we did not take the traditional glamor pic with dog. But I put the dog in an ice box and froze him. I have the dog mounted along with the empty Dasher case that got him. I have never attempted a longer shot but hope to sometime in near future.
Luckily the 115 gr Berger made a pencil hole through his brain and the poor fellow never moved a muscle
