6.5x47 with 142 matchkings

Almost got my 6.5x47 ready. Thought I would put together a few rounds before I get it. I got 142 matchkings and h4350 or varget. 24.5” barrel with 7.5 twist.

Any suggestion on a starting point and maybe how far off the lands. Any help will be appreciated.

I shoot that exact combo except my barrel is an 8 twist. My final load is higher, but you should start a little below 36 grains to be on the safe side. 0.005 jump works for me. I also have had good luck with the 130 AR Hybrids in that rifle.

The 142s have been great in my 6.5x47. I shot them at 15 off when the barrel was new (after 50 rounds to break it in) and never chased the throat. I liked H4350 for the 140 and up, and Varget for anything lower, but then again I'm shooting a 30" barrel. Not sure which will help you with shorter barrel.

IF you have a reasonably short Freebore, I'd try Jamming them ( lightly about, .010 - .012 into lands ) with, a 1/2 grain, Less Powder than say at, .015 to .020 "Off Jam" arrived at, from doing your, Max, SAFE, Pressure Testing.
My 6 XC Load, went from, the .4's to, "BugHoling" in, the Low 2's after,.."Jamming" the 107 grain, tipped, SMK's.
It's worth a Try, as this Method, "Aligns" the Bullet to rifles throat, very well, for those SMK's.
Good Luck !

Thanks a lot. Sounds great.

Are you using 4350 or varget.

No limits. I could jam.
I’d do a seating depth test with a warm charge starting 20 in and back up .003 at a time until you get little dots. 6.5x47 is just wonderful.

I’ve used sierras jammed for a square mark and farther off the lands than I consider sane. You’ll just have to test it.

If you just want half moa, seat them 20 off and do your powder work.

Well said, good advice. I back up .002 at a time. I have only every jumped them once. .002 off. I have shot many thousands in lots of barrels. Then revisit powder. Then a bump either way for seating and you should be there.

I would say the vast majority of sierras I shot were .020 in. I had a couple of guns that liked a small jump- but I had a 22-250 one time and I finally jumped them a mile out of frustration and it shot a bunch of high .1s at .120 off.

Never did understand that barrel but it shot well there. Not my cup of tea.

Sort the bullets by ogive length. Please read Clancy's posts.

AA4350 with Rem 7 1/2's are shooting extremely tight in my barrel along with H4350 and Varget.

36g of Varget is a good place to start, and you will see one heck of a difference in primers, you never know.

On the barrel I am shooting now, tiny, tiny groups were with 130g Berger vld hunting, and I got almost as good with 130g VLDM.

My freebore is .129

My 6.5x47L loved 140 gr Bergers VLDs and H4350. 7.5 twist Criterion barrel. It didn't matter where I seated them between jamb and .010 off. 39 gr H4350, cci 450 primer. Shot great. I now have an 8 twist Krieger on it. Just working up loads.

I run 142 accubonds in my light hunting rig at 2750 fps with a 24" barrel using H4350. I dont have jump or load numbers hndy but I had a long throat reamer cut and think I am loading about .020 off the lands. It puts the bullet heel at full bore just ahead of the doughnut. Stupid easy to get to shoot even with a very light barrel. Doing Christmas stuff but if I get home at a decent time I will send you my load data. Seems like it was a fairly book load from memory.

A lot of great info here. Thanks a bunch fellows. I have read them all and I am seeing a leaning how to seat them. Also the powder. Thanks a lot. Keep it coming.
