Savage Model 10 223 Remington Ejection Issues

Savage Model 10 in 223 Remington Issue: It will extract and eject Hornady brass. It seems a little week when it ejects the Hornady brass. With new Winchester brass, it sometimes won't extract new or once fired brass. When it extracts the Win. brass, it doesn't eject it. I wonder if the weak ejection could be a weak ejector pin spring. Looking at the extractor, I don't see any obvious damage. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are kits, but a slightly larger ball under the extractor, and a new ejector spring might cure your problem...rsbhunter

I’ll say this. You can get new ejector and spring, and extractor and ball from savage for free or buy any of the available kits to fix the issue. I have a model 10 and it will eject all brass except for Nosler. Is it just a bad lot of brass I got, or all Nosler brass I’m not sure

Did you measure the Winchester brass? Wouldn't surprise me if it was out of spec. If it is the rifle and its still under warranty, I would send it back.

You need one of these ball bearings under thee extractor, problem solved. Ace Hardware 9/64 ball bearing. Fastenal 3.5mm /.140"

If you shoot a lot buy a couple of kits and replace them at least once a year. That has worked for me.
The springs are a week point.

Ditto on the springs...I've pulled springs out that were twisted like a snake! I went to Brownells and ordered multiple springs and parts for bolt head. Another thing to consider is having your firing pin spring replaced, or the whole firing pin assy. keep the old pin and change out that spring and have a replacement assy ready....rsbhunter

Something else I found (the hard way) that can affect ejection is the extractor groove diameter of the case. Some brands are smaller than others, and some brands vary more than others.

Take the cases that do eject, and measure the groove. Then check the ones that don't. You might find something interesting.

In my experience, if the groove is deep enough that the hook doesn't touch the bottom, the case will just drop rather than flip out. There should be a range above which it works every time, a range below which it does not work at all, and a middle band where it's intermittent.

Pocket magnet, small plastic bag, local bicycle sales and repair shop. 2 or 3 $$. Small ball bearings they use for wheel bearings. Take a few, they're small.

Had same issue after 2000 rds.
Replaced ejector spring.
Problem solved.

I went with the Lumley. Easy to install solved my problem.

You may need to replace the parts regulary, every year or two. The spring(? I suppose) wears out and you're back to square one. One of my Savages never had this problem, it's on it's 2nd barrel. But my 223 Savage always has intermittent ejection issues, the replacement parts help but it seems the fix is temporary.
