Alliant Powder Future Distribution Question

Ha! You should be in the UK. Edgar Brothers, our Hodgdon, Winchester and Alliant importer lists Alliant 'Reloder' grades with Recommended Retail Prices of £105 to £107 per pound. That's c.130-133 USD at the official exchange rate.

No gunshop would stock them at those prices given that's equivalent to over £200 / kg and Viht powders are priced at £105-130 / kg at the counter depending on the shop.

All academic anyway, as Alliant Re grades have been unavailable here for a couple of years now.
Dang Laurie...That pricing would put me out of the sport.

And then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Brownells had 8 pounders of Rl-26 earlier today, I got lucky and got 1 jug. Right place at the right time. First time I've seen it in 3 years.
Update.... They took my card information and completed the order. Then I get an email a few minutes later with a "back order" status.

Let's say a specific car dealership in normal times sells 1000 cars a year and they make $1000.00 per car. That is $1,000,000 profit per year. Let's say it cost $750,000 per year to run the operation. That leaves $250,000.

Now let's imagine supply dries up and they can only get 500 cars per year. Now what? They are negative 250k unless they make some major cutbacks.

Same with powder. And everything else in the world.

Got a notice from PV that 8#ers of RL26 were available at 8 this morning. When I fired up the comfuser at about 9:15 it was all gone at $422 a jug. Not that I would have paid that much, it cost $205 in Jan. of 2020.

It's also the only RL powder that I haven't found a substitute for yet. N565 doesn't quite get it. The search continues... it gives me something to do.

VV N-160 is very close to RL 26. The 160 is slightly faster. N-165 is on the burning rate charts as being faster than RL26 but in my testing that is not at all true. 165 is considerably slower that 26. If I had to rate those three powders on a 1 to 10 scale for burning rate, I would rate 160 as a 1, 165 as a 10 and RL26 as a 3. In other words the RL 26 is much closer to 160 than 165. That's a complete contradiction to what the burning rate charts suggest.

Thanks for that, was about to pull the trigger on an 8#er of N165 today. Still might.

N160 didn't quite work out that way in 280 Rem with 150s. IMR 7828 matched RL26 velocities but didn't group well. N160 pressured out about 100-150fps less than 26. It did group very well though. Maybe it will shine with 160s or 180s?

There are a still some combinations to try in a few other cartridges now that N565 hasn't proven to be of much use in medium capacity cases. It almost reminds me of charcoal briquets.

At this moment Vihtavuori and Nammo Lapua are hiring people so much as possible.
Nammo Lapua and Vihtavuori have announced that they have enough work to do for next ten years. So all can guess where that capacity is going, for military. And for me, living in Finland, it is a good sign. It is good that our military is prepared against russia.
are you close to where they build the Tikka rifles

5 pages of posts and no one calls the Manufacturer and asks them?
No offense intended, but the manufacturers are the same people who list their burning rates, relative to other powders, incorrectly. The OP wants to know the truth from shooters who use the powder, and KNOW what the characteristics of it are. Many times the manufacturer is the last source of information you want to probe.

I just got back from the grocery store, I had to go get some cream for my coffee and a few other things.

There are many items that I looked at that have doubled in price in 5 years. Many items. Before COVID you could catch 2 liter diet Coke on sale for a buck 25 now the normal price is now $2.99 and will go on sale for $2.49. My favorite bologna that I used for smoking used to be $5.99 on sale is now $10.99.

If Vista outdoors would have announced they were doubling the price on powder it would not have surprised me. And keep in mind the price increase was at the dealer price which no one is really talking about what the dealer price actually is. All the talk is what you're hearing retailers selling it for. I think a lot of people might be surprised at how much markup is actually happening at the retail level more than the distributor level.

Production is going to European military contracts - we just get what’s left over, or enough to barely keep us happy, because when the demand from military contracts is less, we then become the main customer base again.

It sounds good to say there’s simply a shortage, but what isn’t said is decisions are made to maximize profits, and right now that means military contracts get as much powder as possible. Hopefully in 5 years life will get back to normal.

If Puttin gets to keep much of Ukraine and then focuses on occupying the next country on his list, powder shortages may outlast us all, and our kids will be posting about some dude in alley that has some RL19 if you have the money.

After what I heard went on in the Senate chambers the other day, we all may be in a better place than this earth soon.
