funny reamer holder...

I’ve posted this before. Made by gunsmith Bill Myers. Radial and axial float. Mine might be the last one he made as he passed away not long after I received it. It works well but I prefer to use my simple Bryant/Tooley pusher.

I had enough cutoffs laying around to cobble one of these together. Aluminum is absolutely not the right material for the outer collar. Polished steel on polished aluminum might as well be super glue. For my purposes I don't really need it to be locked up tight so not a problem.

I'll give it a test run on something. I have a feeling what I've created is an overly complicated less desirable pusher.

All this talk of reamer holders lately had me looking at ebay for things I don't need. I came across this Kennametal floating reamer holder. It seemed interesting because it has the usual parallel float, as well as angular.

They retail for 900-ish dollars, and was "unused, no box" for about 120 bucks. I figured I might as well give it a whirl.

USPS showed up today... and... it's a little bigger than I expected. I was laughing for several minutes.

Have a laugh at my expense. It might be useful if I ever do a BMG.

That's not a bad chuck, it's a DA400, you could in theory find a 7/16" collet to hold a reamer, but the question is if that is even a floating holder? It certainly doesn't look like it. It looks like a Kenametal DA400 collet chuck, best I can tell...but what do I know...it's your tool not mine! ;) Probably would have been better to spend $275 on a proper PTG floating reamer with the proper MT for your tailstock, but again, what do I know...;)

I have the right collet for it. It certainly floats, but it's so big and heavy it would never float with a chamber reamer. It would probably bend the reamer

Terminology is hard to standardize or get agreement on meanings.

I deleted some of my comment because I wasn't implying anything about people here. I was thinking more in terms of guys I've worked with in the past. I don't want to be taken the wrong way.

I thought the comment was good, I certainly got what you were saying and didn’t even think about it the wrong way :)

JGS is a great product. They have a newer smaller version that's built "differently"
Talk to me about the differences. I’ve got both. I “think” I like the newer (smaller) one better, but I go back and forth. The older one is a bit stiffer. I haven’t tried to take either apart.

I personally don’t know. I have the larger bodied one. They say the smaller one has less “push out” when under pressure- I don’t know what that means.

lol, that is a biggin. I bet you got that on eBay. I almost bought it before going rigid. I still may buy one if yours works. Can you tell me if if is spring loaded? Meaning does it want to spring back to the center? The Somma one I bought did this and it caused issues.
God Bless,
Dustin

It's not spring loaded - but it's so big and heavy it might as well be. It's 8lbs with the collet. I have shotguns that weigh less! - Can you take the springs out of the somma?
