Wind rose

I just took a look at this on my phone, and isn't the description Sierra is giving you 100% opposite of the chart for a right hand barrel? Granted looking on a small phone screen.

It does look that way. I missed that and it's not what I see. What I and many top shooters have seen for years agrees with the wind rose. Interesting, to say the least. Good catch. I'll read it in more detail when I get time. They have pages and pages of this stuff on their site. I may call them in a few days and speak to Paul or someone. It's hard for me to believe there's not a typo somewhere or that it's explained elsewhere in all those pages. Still, how is rf different. They have some sharp guys there.

The point of all of this was to reduce confusion, not add to it so I'll do my best, right or wrong to get to the bottom of this. All I want is for to all be on the right page, either way. There could possibly be a difference in subsonic vs supersonic so I won't make any further assumptions until I get some answers. These charts have been around a long time. It's hard to believe most every shooter in the world has been backward for that long. Lol!

As part of his commentary on his Wind Vector Effect, Mr. Myers states, "Trying to keep all of the variables straight in the mind when shooting will make one cross-eyed so the chart is for reference as to which quadrant the specific wind direction will influence the bullet path. This chart does not reflect the distance that a bullet will be moved, but only indicates the vertical and horizontal deflection that may be expected from being influenced by the respective wind directions."

Early on, I found it helpful to break his chart down into color-coded quadrants in order for me to readily grasp the effects of wind for his demonstration. And to fully realize the teachery of the 1 o'clock/ 7 o'clock wind syndrome.

It certainly appears there is a typo in the Sierra chart. Unless the range they tested on is across a steep hill rising up on the RHS, which would cause LH wind to push bullets up, instead of slightly down as is usual with RH twist barrels. I think maybe the wording is incorrect.

Thank you. I knew I wasn't the only one!

Here is target results with controlled environment at the BRL (Ballistic Research Laboratory), Aberdeen Proving Grounds conducted by Robert L. McCoy in November, 1990 in a report called::

"AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CALIBER .22 LONG RIFLE MATCH AMMUNITION"

Effects of 20-mph wind on Eley Tenex 22LR ammo at 50-yds
(Numbers corresponding to the wind directions)

Very nice! Thank you

Here's one explanation. In a nutshell, the bullet points slightly into the wind dependent upon direction of rotation. This causes a high pressure side and a low pressure side. The difference in pressures creates more or less lift. At least that's my understanding. I'm sure there are differences in the AMOUNT of lift between rf and cf, but not in direction of lift for respective direction of spin of the bullet. I don't use the chart to tell me how far the bullet will move but rather, the direction and how much is relative. Otherwise, I see so reason cf would be different from rf. Interesting read either way...

If high pressure and low pressure, based on Bernoullis principal is the cause. Velocity and twist rate, bullet spin rate, would surely be major factors between 22 RF, and CF. The increase in spin rate would surely influence pressures more.

I wouldn't disagree with that. The chart doesn't infer how far the bullet is moved, but the direction of poi and relative position in other wind conditions. If both are rh twist, I would expect it to be very similar unless subsonic is different. Things can get strange sub vs super sonic, so I'll refrain from assumptions other than these charts are all similar and have been in use for decades.

Is there a link to purchase this sticker somewhere?.....I looked and couldn't find......Thanks

Rick
I think most people just size it up or down and print it out themselves. You might sent an email to the address on the chart above, though. He might have something.

Here's this one..I prefer the top one but they appear to say the same thing

Found my way to the mentioned site. I put 2 sets of stickers in my cart for a total of $7.90, went to check out only to find out that shipping for the stickers would be $55.00......o_O''I guess I may have to POP for some ink for my printer..LOL................But Thanks

Dammit! Can't blame ya! The first chart has a website and email. I didn't see decals but might be worth sending them an email.

It is a Canadian company, hence the big shipping charge.
Believe me, I feel your pain; as a Canadian buying things from the US and having them shipped here is painful and expensive. The shipping and duty charges add up quickly, then depending on who the carrier was the brokerage fees when it arrives can be more than the cost of the item - UPS is the worst.
