Savauser The abomination

Guess I have too much time on my hands. Here is the beginning on a Mauser with a Savage 110 Bolt head build The Savauser. I machined the damaged Mauser bolt head off, bored the body for the Savage bolt head, all the while keeping the measurements true. I also ground the extractor rib off the body. The Savage bolt head works in the Mauser with just a wee bit of polishing. The Bolt head had to be bored for the Mauser firing pin. I intend to machine the inner ring out of the Mauser receiver as the lugs are a little longer on the Savage and this will make it perfect. I know it is a silly project but I have a damaged bolt and thought why not make it useful? It will end up in 6.5x55 I think...

FYI, Yes I am keeping the third lug :)

There are some interesting problems that almost every silly project runs into. Never know when you will need the solutions to those problems elsewhere

OP, Did you use the savage pin that holds the bolt head to the body? did the Mauser FP pass through the hole in it? Curious.

Wow! I thought I was the only one crazy enough to try something like that. Very fun!
My current project is reducing a magnum bolt face down to 12mm(30-06), also on a Mauser. Also lunacy.

Are you using the savage extractor/ejector?

Yes I am using the Savage Extractor and Ejector, I have done a lot of the Mauser bolt faces over the years, opening and closing them. To reduce it I usually weld them up and machine them to the necessary dimension. You have to do one quick weld, let cool, then again and again, takes about 6 times, so it does not get hot.

You beat me to it, I have a savage bolt head that I was getting ready to do the same thing with. Please show pics of how you are going to deal with the firing pin. The barrel tenon will be a little different too. I know you had to remove some material from the bolt head to allow it to slide in the rails with enough clearance.

Ok so pardon me for asking silly questions. What is it about a Savage bolt head that influenced your decision about going this route?

And you mentioned keeping all 3 locking lugs. I'm not following how that works either. If you don't mind please expound on that a bit.

Thanks in advance.

See the bolt body in the above photograph. The two primary lugs are in the front of the bolt body while the 3rd lug is pictured right in front of the bolt handle. The 3rd lug has been referred to as the 'safety' lug because it doesn't come into play until the front lugs fail catastrophically. It doesn't touch in the receiver until there is a bolt failure.

:)

I have made bolts for Remingtons with a Savage-style bolt head, but I never used the Savage part; I just made one. I think your use of a Savage head on a Mauser is an interesting concept.
Why did you remove the guide rib? My understanding is that you will remove the inner ring to clear the lugs. I assume you will then lengthen the barrel tenon? Neat project. WH

You do not have to remove much at all, I just polished\sanded the bolt head with a Dremel until it fit nicely, you have to polish the top and bottom of lugs and the rounded part (not the LUG but in between them) until you remove enough for it to go. Think I used like a 120 sanding drum and lightly touched the areas...

Just because I had a few laying around from Magnum conversions so I figured what the heck. The olde Mauser bolt lugs were set back (damaged) hince the project.
