Zermatt Origin build - PRS trainer

Dry firing stages is overlooked often. This practicing will definitely up your impact percentages. Also transferring from one position to another knocking time off which in return gives you more time for aiming and executing an accurate shot.

I agree. Fortunately I'm in it for the fun more than anything. I used to compete even superbike racing. It killed the fun out of it, so I started doing Track-Days mostly with the odd race here and there.
I suppose I prefer to compete against myself nowadays

Guys with 223 trainers (not 223ai), how far do you stretch those bullets ??

600 yards max ? or 800 yards ?
I'm just curious because it sounds like lots of fun for a portion of the cost of a decent PRS rifle.
I really wish we were allowed Suppressors in Canada. I have a R-700 with a 20" barrel in a LSS chassis. It's only a 9" twist, but shoots 75 gr Horn. BTHP-Match and 77 gr SMK just fine. Shoots the 52 gr BTHP SMK the best with Win-748. But the light 52 gr SMK falls to shit after 300 - 350 meters.

Build it with a good long barrel and you can shoot past 1000. I have shot to 1150 when using my 75 ELDs in a match. Be advised wind gets tricky out there but they make it.

Shooting 223 at long ranges is a ton of fun, especially when shooting against yourself, but it helps to have a good spotter.

Typically I am shooting between 4000-6000' elevation so the bullets fly pretty easy. I went down to Alabama a few years ago and shot at sea level, and the difference on a cold morning was eye opening, things really started to drop at 900.

The 75 and 80 ELD work well, and I've shot the 77 SMK and TMK, as well as the 70, 77, and 85 RDF. This year I had success out of my 18" setup at a distance of 1100 yards with the 85 RDF on a 10" target.

With a 26 inch barrel and 24.0 grains of Varget, I'm pushing them about 2775 fps. I could probably go up a little higher. What is the load that you running to get that velocity?

In my 27" barrel I use 25.1grns of Varget or 24.5grns of 8028 in Hornady brass but Starline 5.56 brass is basically identical. I am loaded to OAL of 2.470" at .020" off.

I guess I would ask the opposite question. Why would anyone go with the shoulder when you can just use a nut? You can tune the headspace right where you want it, you can move the barrel on to another action. If you use one of my barrels you can even go to different kinds of actions with the same barrel.

I have no idea why people are stuck into the idea that you need to have a shoulder. After using both the nut has more advantages than it has disadvantages. Despite rumors to the contrary

Maybe do a post of what barrels and how they fit... tl3 barrels and Origin with the correct spacer Savage etc...

The Zermatt actions were designed to use Savage nut barrels. So, any Barrel that fits a Savage with a nut will fit those actions.
Yes but, not without the proper spaced recoil lug nut TL's are integrated and So you are not getting to the question you asked. "WHY? "I have no idea why people are stuck into the idea that you need to have a shoulder. After using both the nut has more advantages than it has disadvantages. Despite rumors to the contrary"

Why? no one has clearly defined the .250 .150 recoil lug for the tenon length difference. I just asked a barrel distributor, yesterday 17Nov23, if they had a barrel for the Origin and he said no but he had one for a TL3. I asked why not just put a different lug on it? He had not a clue.

It took a couple hours of research and found the two people making the recoil lug. So a TL3 barrel will work on a Origin and any other Small shank Savage will also work...

I don't think the origin is guaranteed to hold a headspace like the tl3

It is. They make shouldered prefits for it also. You can also change the factory lug with one to use the TL3 shouldered prefits or PVA also makes a spacer system to use with factory lug.

I am all shouldered prefits as it’s just plain easy. No nuts and headspace gauges. Screw it on and snug it down. Headspace is never an issue when using a good smith. I got two shouldered prefits in 6 Creed months apart from PVA and they had the same headspace. Have also gotten others like that too.

Ryan Hunt Also makes the Lugs https://huntslongrange.com/product-category/precision-rifle-components/?v=7516fd43adaa

Agree. I went prefit about 4years ago. I have built 2 impact sa’s and an origin long action in 300 wm. All are easily sub .5 moa. It’s not cheap to build one per se, around $2500 or so and the initial tools required also cost a bit.

I bought a barrel vise, ft lbs torque wrench and a bunch of other stuff like headspace gauges, the origin action wrench and a remy 700 style action wrench.

Well worth it though because now I can just swap barrels pretty quickly.

I do check barrel headspace but have yet to find one that is off.
