Dont ship barrels in pvc tubes

UPS has a triangular box (38"x6"x6") that works great for round things. They'll even send you them for free, and the other carriers accept them just fine.

USPS sells a 36” long box that is like 3”x3” square. So won’t roll around. They’re only a couple dollars. I cut them to the length I need(under 30” for usps so no oversized fee).

Now, A barrel will slide right into a foam pool noodle and provides excellent protection. The foam noodle will also slide inside the usps box. That’s about as secure of a package that you can get IMO.

The size and shape of the package really doesn't make any difference provided the contents can not move, even a little bit, inside. I get and reuse heavy round tubes all the time. When shipping four or more barrels, I build a crate. If it is a repeat customer, they ship the crate back to me for reuse. Just to be safe, attach identification info to the item. If a barrel comes out of the package, it is just a chunk of steel without any id to show who it belongs to.

If you put stuffing in at both end of the container, does it really matter what the barrel is shipped in?

Stuffing wouldn't help in the situation Alex showed. The problem is the PVC cap shattering upon impact (presumably dropped end-on to a hard floor.) Once the cap shatters, your stuffing and the barrel come right out.

What's the problem? It's just a long triangle box. Put the barrel in a pool noodle which fits nice and tight in the box and send. Shipped a few that way.

Dave Tooley scolded me several years ago for shipping one like that.

I just sent him a barrel in a PVC tube , guess I'll get scolded . But a couple years back I got a barrel in the mail that looked like it was used for a sludge hammer . And the barrel even had dings in it .

I haven't spend any money in there in a long time because of their 2A stance, but damn, it's not easy to do when you have kids in sports.

I love pvc or cardboard, but the ends have to be stuffed padded and capped properly.

The padded in a rectangular package, or pyramid. But more than once I've had trouble with there machinery reading labels not placed on a flat plain.

But PVC, Cardboard, even wood packages have to have the items padded and snugly packed to avoid movement as momentum is the culprit. I've had no problem once the label is on a flat plane, and the items inside are snug sides and ends, and secured.

I even had cardboard and over 2" of hard foam on the end .
But a couple years back I got a barrel in the mail that looked like it was used for a sludge hammer . And the barrel even had dings in it . So I guess you have to ship it in what ever and hope for the best . Now I'll have to buy a hard case to ship the gun ( it is a glue in )) and everyone will know what is in it .

This is good info to share though. It never occurred to me to ship in PVC, but if someone would have suggested it to me, I'll admit, it would have sounded like a decent idea.

Except, I don't like to ship things in round tubes because they roll around and because of that carriers charge more.

I have used the triangular boxes before, but now they ask if the shipping container isn't rectangular and they charge more if you say it's not. I never know how to answer that question with the triangle boxes.

So, I'll make my own length boxes from any large box that I have saved. I used up all my golf club boxes over the years.

I bubble wrap them. Then cling wrap them and add extra padding on both ends. The trick then is to make sure nothing moves inside the box. And also as important, make sure the box is filled, otherwise it gets crushed.

Foam "Pool Noodle" from Wally World. Maybe $3.00.
Barrel "centered" in foam tube, zip tied along the length and at the ends of the barrel so it can't move. Extra length at ends as padding. Trim/shorten box to fit foam. Can't move and LOTS of stranded packing tape. Same box to Oregon and back a couple of times, IIRC. No issues. No tire marks on the box either.

I DO keep my barrels in PVC pipes at home.
