My 6br went 'shotgun' on me.

I built, a 6 XC "RemAge" Rem 700 with, a Criterion Barrel and Bedded it to, an H-S Precision Stock and it,.. "BugHoles" !
I put, a "Toe Rudder" on the stock, ( a Bag Rider ) for GREAT, "Tracking" !
I'd NEVER sell my, Aluminum Pillar, Glass Bedded,.. H S Precision Stock !
I did because the grip was awkward and didnt fit my large hand. What throat do you have on your xc? I have one with a .160 reamer and want to do a field barrel for my chassis and shot some lighter bullets like 87gr. Not sure about the long jump.

I seem to remember some chassis designs having little fingers or big magazine wells nearly touching the action that guide the magazine. If your chassis has contact with the action in this area that would not be good.

Well, we’ll all be waiting for hunting season to end to find out what the issue is. This is like getting to a good part on a tv show and having to wait until the next season to see if Lassie can find Timmy trapped in the well.

I have, a .104 FB and, a 1-7.5 Twist, Heavy Sporter Bbl that shoots, 80 grain FB Berg's, up to the 107 SMK's -108 gr Berger Elite Hunters,.. REAL "Well" ! I use, Norma Brass and Forster Dies.
Yes the Grip is short and Funky ( I'll ADD on, some extra Wood to extend, the pistol grip ).
Might look at, Bedding the First 1 1/2 inches of the Barrels "Shank" Portion of your stock, then free float

Thx. I think will find a shorter freebore reamer for next barrel

Yes, on my h-s stock the shank was bedded!! but i dont want to do that cause I am going 'modular' with switch barrels. I have a heavy sporter ready for a 6xc ream job to be chopped to 22in but I think I will sell my reamer and get a shorter free bore one for this barrel. what jump do you have to be able to seat 105-108? powder still has space with no crunch? powder type?

The 108 gr Elite Bergers were, at around, .025 / .030 "Off" but I haven't done, a Lot of Testing on them ( sorry ! )
The 107 gr. SMK's were at, "Lite Jam" ( .010 to .015 worth of Rifling Marks, around Bullet ) they are, the New factory "Tipped", SMK's ( Cleaned up / "Trued" around, the Hollow Point ). My Rifle went from, the high 3's and 4's, Down into the Low 2's for 5 shots @100,.. Once I started, Jamming Bullets !
I found my Rifles Max chg of, StaBall 65 at, .025 off, then backed off .5 to .7 tenths of a grain, on powder and, moved the Bullet,.. IN !
I read a bunch of Old Posts on HERE, to find out, where to depth, "Set them", and several guys, liked Jamming. Now,.. I'm SOLD on it, for THIS Bullet ! The 108 Elites shot in the .3's / 4's without messing / tuning, much. The Charge I settled on is, 40.7 grs of StaBall 65 "Thrown" with, Fed 210 Match primers, Fire formed Peterson Brass, and 107 SMK's, @ 2,950 FPS
Good Luck !!

A muzzle device such as a tuner or brake or even a suppressor would likely help. Some of those skinnier profile barrels do like to be held (bedded out in front of recoil lug) a little bit ;)

You win!! I checked all suggested and no issues. Then I did this with pencil lead and taped it in place and groups shrank. And then shrank more when I added more lead! I will have to thread bbl and put on something with a bit of weight as you suggested, or bore and fine thread a hole in the aluminum under the shoulder to screw in a bolt for some up pressure. That part of the shoulder was bedded on the f/g stock I took it out of.

MPA makes a gadget called a lug lock and believe this occurs with many chassis types
I have no idea if this would work in your MDT chassis and might be quicker and easier to bed it yourself
I Missed this post. I have this on my MPA chassis. I could probably get one and mount it on my MDT chassis. Will check for space. it wont hurt if not necessary. thx!

I decided to take my Mod7 lightweight 6br out of its h-s stock and put in a lss mdt chassis. Why? because I have always wanted a chassis. The shilen barrel is 21.6 in and .620 at the muzzle. Light sporter profile I guess. Anyhow this rifle shot lights out when in the stock. Now it shoots patterns with the same 30.5g varget and 105 bergers. I even loaded a batch at 30.0 g and same inconsistent patterns. So looks like there is no 'powder tune' fix.
In the old stock the barrel was floated past the shoulder. So I assume that this lightweight barrel is just picking up too much vibration in the aluminum stock?
I sold the h-s stock so reverting back is not an option. I dont want to try a tension tab. What is the other option? A heavier barrel is assume?
How do you like that 21.6"? Having trouble giving up the scratch to get one made up. Do you feel that length is inherently accurate like they say?

I dunno. My barrel is Shilen not match chambered for hunting and I was able to shoot best 5 1/2 in 5x at 1000 with it. 2750 fps 30.5 vgt 105 hornady bthp 'match'. Up close one hole with 105 bergers and 103eld-x <1 moa at 600. I bought Hornadys for plinkers! I like my light weight barrels short. All I know.

I can't shoot as consistent with my Lilja barrel 22-250 in a chassis as when it is in a HS precision off the bench/bags. However for hunting and shooting off a bipod in the snow the chassis is more comfortable. I do see my heartbeat when shooting in the chassis stock.

what contour is your Lija? When I told my smith friend of my woes, the first thing to come out of his mouth was to put some tension on that little barrel. I have a 22in 6xc heavy sporter coming for that chassis and it had better shoot!!

Typical Dasher freebore is 140 plus. No one bats an eye... In fact, they will often claim NOTHING will shoot better than a Dasher.

Yet, if you copy the same freebore in the 6br or 6xc or whatever, people will say it's too long. It must be 104 fb or whatever.

The 6 Creed is 180 freebore. No one says a word.

160 fb is between 140 and 180. It's a great freebore for nearly anything over 80 grain bullets. Most varmint bullets LIKE to be jumped. The 87 vmax goes down in the neck almost the same as the 108 Berger.

On my well used 6bra brass, I could not do a jump test with the 87 vmax because that bullet was hitting the donut.

If you have a 104 freebore and you are jumping 30 to 40 thou with the 87 vmax you will eventually be in the donut. Probably already are...

Good summary!

To wrap up my 'shotgun' thread: I got rid of the chassis stock and put my 6br back in a new carbon fiber one. I took it up to my 'spot', boresighted it and nailed a 10in plate at 1000. The 3 small hits are the 6br. Others a diff round. Definitely better than 1.5in groups at 100 with the chassis! Mystery solved!
