i just got into prs beginning of season but dont get to do it as much as i would like. im currently using strelok pro and it gets me by pretty good. i also have the hornady 4dof app. im curious which is more accurate or a better program and if its really worth it to jump into the kestrel world or wait till i am shooting more matches. thanks in advance.

Any of the apps are fine and capable of giving you good data, the key is doing testing to confirm that your app and your actual downrange results line up. You'll want to "true up" your muzzle velocity and BC with any of them, kestrel included.

I spent the first year or two of PRS using an app on my phone before I switched to a kestrel, and I know a lot of successful shooters who also had good results using a phone app. All a kestrel gets you is real time temp/wind data to incorporate into your solver, in a more handy package.

Out to 1200 yd all of the ones I've tried give the same results. Proper calibration using field data is the major factor for success.

I'm still using the standard "non-Elite" Kestrel 5700 that you can get for $400.

The solver is still an Applied Ballistics engine, you just don't get the custom bullet drop curves and you don't get the Target Card feature. Otherwise they are the same. Funny enough, for the bullet that I shoot the custom drop curve lines up with G7 curve so no differences there even.
