savage axis 6gt low velocity ?

So I have more time than sense, plus a lathe and mill. I built an aluminum chassis for my wal mart $200.00 axis 2. The barrel is a criterion 6gt 28'' 1.7-5 twist. The load is 33.5 grains of varget speed is 2905 with an es of 5. Primer cci 400. 108 bergers.

My problem is I have light ejector marks and some primer blowouts. This velocity seems low. I took the advice from George to start 1 grain low.

Questions

Is my barrel to long?

Are savage axis actions weak?

Ejector marks, your overpressure.

Every barrel is different.
Some will be faster than others.

Quit chasing speed & let the target tell you what it likes.

and, think about headspace, (brass too small and moves in the chamber) not chamber headspace. Only way to get ejector marks is if the brass can move back??? Snug them up!!
Ever hear of a target, "moving" or stationary squawk about how fast the bullet was going that killed it?? Accuracy is #1. If you can't hit what you're aiming at.....

Among other things I would consider changing primers and powder. That cartridge will give you what you need south of 3000 fps. If you want to run it faster, go for it, but at a cost.

My guess is your trying to use the standard bolt. Send it to Carlsbad for a bushing and reduced firing pin diameter, and your blown or blanked primers and craters will be solved!

If your not experiencing hard bolt lift on that short bolt handled Axis, your not pushing to much pressure.

Heavy bullets, long barrels and near max loads require better primer support than light bullets in 24 ish inch barrels in my experience.

You should be using H4350 if you’re chasing velocity.

It is beyond me why Varget is so highly recommended in that case. I was able to outrun Varget by 150 fps with two different bullets ( H4350 with a 108 and N140 with an 88.)

Also, ditch the 400s for 450s.

This may sound odd, but In Wyoming the wind blows hard every day. I always have chased speed with accuracy. If I can get 2900 to shoot well and 3050 to do the same I will short change the barrel life. If there is an advantage to the other please explain.

There is no disadvantage, however, top end loads can be hard to maintain.

A good example is the 6x47 Lapua. You can run it 3150, but you’ll chase your tail. 3020-3050 will hold up a lot longer before a retune, for whatever reason.

I’ve tried it many times and always end up running a milder load and spend much more time shooting than I do tuning as the barrel matures.

Thanks Clancy. I may shoot lower if need be. Right now I'm chasing my tail with a cheap axis action. I have light primer strikes half the time. I only chrono graphed one round tonight. It showed 3008. This was 3th lower powder charged.

I do like to buck the wind. But I like Alex Wheeler's method of target reading. Low horizonal numbers at distance. Believe the target

I've found in other calibers it's not the barrel maturing or heating up. I find tune changes more with humidity and temp changes. But agree, the harder I step on em in the higher node, the window narrows up.

Sharp Shooter Supply, it has the accessorie receiver in the forearm, on this one the bipod is mounted on the insert for that. But removed rides the bags like a double rail forearm, with the center recessed.

I’ve got an axis that has been tricked out also. 26” shilen in 223 in an mdt chassis. CCI 400 primers will frequently rupture when running top end loads (not overloads). Like mentioned above, getting the firing pin bushed will help prevent that. I currently use CCI 450’s and the problem goes away. But sooner or later I’m going to need to get the firing pin bushed. Light firing pin strikes would occur on mine if I didn’t pull straight back on the trigger. I know, sounds weird but that’s what was causing it. Have switched to a Jard trigger and never looked back. The best trigger for savage made IMO.
