I'd like to buy a BR rifle stock

I want to build a 30br benchrest rifle. After looking around I see that stock prices are pretty high.

So I'm looking for a stock maker that could make a stock for my project that I could finish and save some money. It would be nice to buy something inletted but again money is my biggest concern. That and weight of the stock is extremely important.

Does anyone know of a person that is trying to start up a stock making business and his prices haven't gotten out of hand?

Thanks to all who answer, I appreciate it.

Stock prices are not out of hand at all. The reason its tough to find stocks is because prices have been too low so no one wants to do it. The light short range stocks are even tougher. I use Roy Hunter stocks but they are not cheap. McMillan might be your best bet.

So many of the stock makers have either stopped or are no longer with us now. It's a problem at the moment...both wood and synthetic, if you want something decent and affordable without waiting a year plus. Particularly for short range stocks. Following.

I had heard that Roy had stopped. Please do correct me if that's not the case. Definitely a good option

Look at https://jmstockcompany.com/ His stocks look good and price seems reasonable.

Here are a few pictures...I'm just a below average guy but these stocks made by Roy were worth every penny...they put a smile on my face every time I pull the trigger. He made me one and I loved it so much I had him make a second one. In this game if you want the best you just have to pay. I've done just enough gun work that I know what it takes and the guys that put out the best rarely if ever get what their time is worth.

If you're looking for a lightweight stock on the cheap, then good luck. They don't exist. A new stock is upward of $1600, and you will wait a year on it, at least. I know one competitor that waited 4 years on a stock to get finished.

So as someone who is completely unfamiliar with competition this may be a stupid question but here goes.

Apart from the eye-candy finishes, would it be unreasonable to make your own benchrest stock *if* you understand stock shaping and correct bedding processes?

I personally do not have the time or disposable income to participate in competition right now, but I find the idea of experimenting with a benchrest chambering in a benchrest stock intriguing. Thus my potentially ill-advised question.

While waiting for your unicorn visit “The Shooters Corner” if you want to get acquainted with benchrest.
Not sure who this is directed at? I'm Familar with The Shooters Corner. I enjoy making things so if you are addressing me and you have something enlightening to suggest please continue.

DShortt, I doubt any offense was intended... By all means build everything you can always.....My guess is after you get started you'll realize there's professionals in every industry. There's a tremendous amount of part timers in benchrest and usually they can't do a full build. Someone who buys a plywood blank and uses a duplicating router is no more a stock builder than someone running a reamer in a bbl like it's a drill bit. If people have the time and machinery by all means do it yourself and have fun, you'd be a lot better off than using most part timers.

Oh, my feathers aren't ruffled at all, I just wasn't sure who his reply was directed to. He's since clarified that.

At some point in the future I will likely build my own. I figure nothing ventured, nothing gained.
