Malloy,
We didn't work up our high nitroglycerin powders with coated bullets because the NG attacks the polymer and will degrade performance.
Ballistically BE-86 will shoot great, and I like Charliemac's suggestion of 5.5gr.
Thank you for buying our BE-86 pistol powder, it is awesome and I'm sure you will like it.
If you are going to shoot a bunch of coated bullets, check out our Sport Pistol powder. That is the cat's pajamas for minor 9mm, all 40 S&S and 45 Auto with coated bullets (and good for jacketed also).
Shoot well,
Paul

Alliant Reloading, I have no skin in the game as a friend gave me all of his grandfathers pistol powders and its 5 times more than I will use in my lifetime. That said it is wonderful to see a well written reply from you, and to know that you care about us! I was appalled when a large bullet makers rep told customers looking for products to "Quit your bitchen". There is not a whole lot of rifle powders in my windfall, and after this I will be looking into Alliant powders. I've used RL17 and RL25 for years, the RL25 in my 338, but its all gone now and Ive been itchen to try RL33.

Paul / Alliant Reloading,

Can you comment further on the degradation of polymer coated bullets and BE-86, I like this powder and have several hundred loaded in different calibers with BE-86 and polymer coated bullets. Is there a shelf life for this combination? Should I prioritize shooting these loads sooner rather than later?

The reaction starts pretty quick and then takes time, but if that ammo is already made and been sitting you should take a sample and pull a few bullets and see for yourself as every polymer coating is slightly different.

Shprindle,
I have not studied how the high NG double base powders such as BE-86 degrade the coating, and there are many manufacturers with various coatings and coating thicknesses, so it is complicated. We did notice right away that the base of the bullets are compromised pretty quickly and then don't survive the ballistic cycle intact, so game over at that point. I don't think there would be a safety issue with blown coating, but the exposed lead changes the deal for the user. If you consider the coated bullet as the base lead for your application, that is closer to what you will be getting and not the cleaner coated performance.
Good luck and be safe,
Paul
