460 weatherby , mostly big.

Well I finally built a 460 weather ree these are 500 grain honady interlocks go on about 2500 according to the book with a 26" barrel. but this is a 31 inch barrel so I'm guessing will be faster chrono update later.

Accuracy shows potential. I am trying to build a relatively low cost "big bore" before I spend quite alot of money on a fifty based cartridge/rifle.

What is your interest to accomplish with your 'Big Bore'?

:)
I keep hearing all these larger than life stories about big guns. Cheytacs and 416 barret 460 styer etc. I have shot thousands of rounds through 338 lapua rifles and just got curious about bigger bullets, higher velocities, downrange energy. I dont know... rather than spend 4-5k building and feeding a bmg based rifle , I figure 1k on a savage that gets me 2/3 of the way is a good step.

I understand completely!

And I agree that the 50 BMG is truly oversold as an idea for most of us.

I started with the .375 H&H and rapidly moved onto the .460 WBY then the .510 Wells Express. The .510 WE is a real hoot to shoot!:D

Now though, the 375 Chey Tac and the .416 Chey Tac are the popular cartridges for the ELR guys. I know a couple of the rascals on SH will disagree but they are a 1/4 bubble off plum! ;)

Enjoy your creation!

:)

Understand completely.
Growing up you read articles about the "big game hunters" using, 458 and 460's
Still might buy a 458 Win mag. some day just to say I had one.
Classic big bore rifles.

The 458 win mag is my favorite deer gun lol i loaded it down 400 gr at 2050 fps or so, its fun to shoot. No brake and 9 lbs or so. Always wanted a 460 tho. The most powerful commercial rifle in the world at a time. Just nice to have something like that in the safe.

I owned a German made Wby Mark V in 460Wby. That thing tossed my 150lb frame back so fast that my eye glasses flew off at every shot. LOL I resolved the problem by doing two things. I got Lasix surgery and don't need glasses anymore and I sold that beastly cannon.

While you're working your way up, here's a thought:
We had guy in our club that shot paper with his 460WBY. The guy was a really big dude and he just wanted more. He eventually had a gunsmith rebarrel the rifle in 50-460WBY.

Some of the big bores are quite accurate. I had a .416 Rem that would group
3/4" at 100 with 400gr swifts at 2400 off shooting sticks.
The 2500fps with a 500 gr is not a hot load in a .460 and recoil shouldn't be bad for a .460. You can push it harder to 2600-2650 but recoil then gets really sharp.

I bought a German Weatherby 460 when I was 18 years old. It had a Penelton muzzle brake and a 26" barrel. It was a pretty good shooter. I just use to set a pie plate at 50 and 75 yards and shoot in off hand. As long as you wore a decent coat and leaned into it it wasn't so bad. I made the mistake only once of trying to shoot it from a bench other than that it was a fun rifle to shoot every once in a while. I still have some brass if your interested some Norma and some hard to find Bell Brass.

I remember that rifle well. Must have been some time ago. It had a mesquite wood stock that was really good looking. Recoil was very sharp even with brake but it was accurate when leaning into and shooting off sticks.

Exactly. It was the same year I bought my first car a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. It was 1976. It was a 1963 model by the serial number it had.

Jim
I understand now, a Hemi Cuda and a .460 Wby.
Power is the name of the game. If, .50 cal BMG had been available then you would have been first in line.
My best

Speaking of German rifles....
Have you thought of the 9.3x62 Mauser {.366"} as an inexpensive avenue to a "Big Bore" rifle?
You can build it on a standard long action and with the 250-300 grain projectiles is more than adequate for any game animal in North America.
If you want an ELR rifle than it to would get you in the door without taking a second mortgage...
Also won't kick the {your preferred euphemism} out of you.... {:~)

Bet you wish you still had the "Cuda"...
Well yes and no. I bought a Pro Street 70 Barracuda in May. I drove it one mile from where they dumped it off at my house in Massachusetts and it's been sitting ever since. I wanted some stuff changed that I didn't care for and the place that's going to do the work is booked until sometime in the fall to the beginning of winter before they can start working on it. The other Cuda that I had is worth more money than this one but it's a bone stock Hemi Cuda. This Pro Street car that I have buries the stock Cuda as far as looks and power goes. I honestly wouldn't want a bone stock original Hemi Cuda over the one that I just bought. It's one of a kind and a bone stock one is just another bone stock one even though you don't see them all too often. My friend who owns Port-A-Tree timing systems has two original 70 Hemi Cuda's so if I want to see one I'll go over to his house and get my fill of looking at some originals.

So here is some chronograph data. 31" barrel, 300gr barnes bullet over rl19.
120gr 2565fps
122gr 2607fps
124gr 2678fps
126gr 2746fps

500gr interlock
2592 average. So not too far off.

If I'm being honest the speeds are underwhelming. 3 different manuals all show 3000fps range with these loads. Maybe I'm missing something but 250fps is quite the difference.

Good news is all the loads are printing less than 1" @100. Average is .761 for 3 shots . So accuracy isn't bad. Not benchrest but not bad.
