Budget .22 LR Rifle Recommendations?

Curious at recommendations for a budget .22. It seems the Savage MKII has gotten high praise in this category. Any recommendations on a variant of that? Doing some general looking I see the MKII F, MKII FV, MKII FV-SR as good options. Any thoughts?

A budget 22 can mean diferent things to different folks, But assuming that you are looking for the lowest dollar rifle that can be counted on to go BANG and have a somewhat reasonable chance of hitting what you are aiming at then one of the Savages you mention will do just fine.

The trigger is so-so but with some work can be made better. The action is gritty and rough. To be nice I will only say that the magazines can be problematic as far as feeding reliably. The plastic stock is a total piece of trash - think recycled milk jugs for a good idea of what they are like.

But for something in the price range of $150 - $250 there is nothing else better unless you happen to run across a better quality used rifle in that price range.

Another vote for the Ruger American Rim fire.... The action is rough it has a cheap plastic stock but mine can put five in a half inch target at fifty and for the price that's pretty good for sure , maybe i got a good one , that would be a first for anything....... During the summer I drive to the range , hang a target out about fifty and take a little of the breakfast taco i picked up for the 30min. drive and rub it on the target and wait for the flies to show up... Yes I have no life.... But neither did this little guy... No matter what you buy the trick with rimefire is finding what ammo it likes and I suggest starting with CCI SV.... That's what hit this little guy at fifty....
Haha I got one at 60 with cci sv and a savage. Took a couple shots to pull off but the idiot wouldn’t fly far lol

Ya that's what's crazy if you miss they stay on the target I guess their not used to anything moving that fast... Or maybe that breakfast taco is to tasty to pass up.... Yesterday I was shooting and had peltor electronic muffs on and was walking back over to shoot 5 more and heard something behind me I turned around and it was a big rat running like heck right at me and I thought what's wrong with this rat he turned and ran up the burn.... I went to start shooting and that what was that and turned around again to see a 5 foot long rat snake looking at me , he was trying to get the rat.... He thought about it and ran back into the ditch.... I was thinking wow the crap you see if you basically live on a gun range that's way out in the country.... I was shooting a .308 one day testing drop and after three of the five shots a deer just walked out from behind the burn... Didn't have a care in the world....

really appreciate everyone's input. I am still leaning towards the Savage and it sounds like I couldn't go wrong between the FV or FV-SR. this will be for the whole family to plink with, and to teach the youngers some scope use, so I don't need a match grade rifle, just something that will help them enjoy it and not lose confidence due to never hitting a target.

A suggestion for you - compare prices between the wood stock version versus the synthetic stock version. My reason for saying that is because the synthetic stock is likely the worse synthetic stock on the market. You will likely end up buying a wood stock for the rifle anyway and it may be less expensive to buy the wood stock model in the first place.

are you talking about the BV and BTV specifically or?

I bought a Savage MK II with stainless barrel and Boyds thumb hole laminated stock. I bought it three years ago at Sportsmans Outlet in Bradford Pa for $299.00 plus tax. I shoot 100 yd bench rest matches at our local club. It will hold 1 inch groups. I won the championship last year with it shooting against Anschultz, Vudoo and a few other top end rifles.

I see the BTV with thumbhold, but it appears to be wood, not laminate. sure wish they were that cheap now...

I am speaking in more general terms about the wood stock vs the synthetic stock. If you can find a wood stock model that fits your budget you will have a better chance of it being a bit more accurate. The Savage synthetic stock is so flimsy that there is little that can be done with it to improve the accuracy using it. I have fooled with two of them and it was time and effort wasted in both cases.
On the other hand if you are set on the synthetic then by all means purchase it, you only have to please yourself. Sometimes we posters think that everyone elses expectations are the same as ours and we get caught up in trying to sway others to our point of view.

I very much appreciate the insight and wasn't wanting to be argumentative at all. Just trying to ensure I was talking the same. I have a credit at Cabelas as well, so purchasing will be limited to there. They, unfortunately, don't have the BTV option at all in the Mark II
