Your choice, ...

This week I came into two rifle scopes, they are pretty good scopes depending upon what class your shooting. And since I'm bored sitting here drinking coffee from my John Wayne coffee cup I thought I would ask you which one you would use for what you shoot and why. It is your choice MOA or MRAD.

The scopes are: Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 or Nikon Black 4-16x50. I like them both and for just goofing around like I do they both work great. So the question is, ... for you which one and why?

Well the 4-16×50 will give you a better field of view since has a bigger bell.
Yeah, that's wrong on so many levels. The "bell" has little to do with the field of view.

In fact, the Vortex scopes have very decent FOV except for the Golden Eagle, which is slightly below average. The Vipers have really good FOV values. In this case, the 6.5-20X44 has an AAOV of 23.7° (6.2ft @100ft), quite high. The Nikon Black 4-16X50 has an AAOV of 20.8° (6.8ft@100ft), which is average.

The Vortex is 14.4 inches long and 21 oz with a 30mm tube. The Nikon is a little longer at 14.8 and heavier at 23oz also with a 30mm tube and is discontinued with little to no support as Nikon exited the riflescope market some years back.

I'm an MOA scope guy. Why? It's what I've always shot, I think in MOA rather than MRAD, I'm getting older and don't want tax my brain anymore than I have to, and I only compete against myself when I shoot. I've put Vortex scopes on the rifles I've purchased in the last few years as they are a good value for the money, Vortex has a solid guarantee and customer service (if you need either). The model I've purchased comes with either an MOA or MRAD reticle. I've gone MOA...

I grew into MilDot way back when. Mostly I'm using an MOA and occasionally MilDot, so either MRAD or MOA will work for me. I think it is what you get used to and like. The reticle display is more important to me. For some application I like a Christmas tree type for others 3/4 Mil works just fine and is extremely fast with an M3 turret, just not as accurate.

If you shoot PRS, go MIL and FFP, with magnification up to about 30X. If you shoot F-Class or bench, go MOA and SFP, with high magnification. For other uses, it's up to you.

Manbuns are passe' and went out with the old chinese custom, unless you are into chinese history and culture/live style. MRAD or MOA, your choice, both work when done correctly.
I’m an MRAD guy. Because it goes with manbun well.

I would usually want more magnification, but or me better glass trumps magnification.
I prefer MIL scopes for range duty. For hunting makes no difference. However if I'm hunting with a MOA scope I prefer it to have some type of Ballistic Drop Compensator reticle so I don't have to dial. I just figure out where each line lands on the target and run it through a ballistic calculator. Then I would write down on a small sheet with 6 or so BDC rang lines and their corresponding distances according to the ballistic calculator. I don't hunt big game farther than 400 yards, so it works like a charm for me.

This would be my personal choice: I would put the Nikon and Vortex on Ebay. When they sell I would buy a Sightron SIII 6x24x50 moa with a zero stop. Nikon quit with scopes and Vortex has just been in business 21 years.

But that's just me.
