Farmer friend need a rifle

Pretty vague request. What's the primary objective? General pests? Coyote? If the targets are raccoon and under, I'd strongly consider 17 HMR unless he has no other animals around that would be at risk of ricochets or over penetration. I dislike .22LR specifically for this reason, also. The 17 has almost zero risk in these two regards.

.223 can be useful in careful hands with a very fragile bullet. Just be mindful that much of the cheap ammo available is fmj and should be avoided for control work.
Not vague at all. He has specified a caliber and action. His reasons for those choices are irrelevant. He is simply asking for recommendations on make and model as well as possible sources.

Just answer the questions he is asking. Very clear and simple.

s A farmer friend need a low cost rifle for use around the farm preferably a bolt action .223. And recommendations would be appreciated, also where is a good place to buy one.
Thanks

Savage has a 308 rifle for less than $400 he would need sights etc. Just one deal I found in 6 minutes on the internet I was astounded at the price I think Best Buy Kmart any of the big box stores in your area that sell firearms or a store like that

I have killed a few GH out to 75 yrds. with a 22RF. That's all you need for pest control. Don't shoot unless you have a good back stop any caliber. Maybe one of the 22 RF magnums for longer range.

StevieB has hit the nail on the head and driven it flush. I love the Tikka, but too much money to be abused on the farm.
I hate this line of thinking. Why does a rifle have to be abused? people always say they treat them like a tool and to me that means taking care of it. Tools cost money and they serve a purpose and they are sure nice to have when you need one. There is absolutely no reason why a nice rifle couldn't be used on a farm or ranch or whatever. There is a big difference between used and abused. Just takes a little bit of effort on the owners part.

Ruger American, Savage, AR's are cheap now, Howa. Farm gun with lots of room to shoot. AR for sure with a 4X scope.

I'm not backing anyone up anymore so these could be for sale for your farmer friend - Pretty sure either will handle whatever is bothering him on his farm.

1906 - Westley Richards 450 3 1/4.
I shot 2 Buffalo, 1 with each barrel on it's 100th birthday, which I thought it deserved.

Whitworth 458 Lott chambered by Jack himself (**)

Both of these have saved my a$$ more than a couple of times, but I could part with them, now that I'm retired.

** mark on 458 Lott stock is from when Rolf Rohwer borrowed it and got whacked by a Lion ... the Lion bit the stock first, then proceeded to tear Rolf up pretty good

If you can find one a Stevens 200 would be one of the older style bolts. No accutrigger and has enough twist up to 70 GR bullets.also blind mag well so nothing to lose..good farm/ranch rifle...but that's me.

Stomp, farms must be totally different in Arizona than they are here. Since the middle of May I can count on one hand the number of days it hasn't rained here. They guy I do work for treats his work guns better than any farmer/rancher I've veer known, Yet still they show signs of rough use.
