Is bolt-action receiver blueprinting still a common thing?

50 millionth indicators ju gage blocks and micrometers reading in 1/10000 allow it to be done. Have to also know how to make correct set- ups.

A friend sent me some gauge blocks of a couple of sizes that had been labeled as measured by a bench mic, that is only used for that sort of thing. I forget exactly how many zeros after the decimal but a lot. I keep them in little plastic cases that they came in in the back of a tool chest drawer and drag them out every so often to check my tools.

But day in day out I can pick up the same piece of brass or the same bullet and get the same number out to .0001”. So if I’m consistent in my work in what I’m doing then why can I not say that I can measure and work to .0001” when so many of us obviously can?

Just to be clear I’m not claiming I can machine something to a particular .0001”, hand it to you and have it come up the same. I’m speaking to consistency on my own bench with my tools.

Hold your tongue just right... Hahaha

My tool room guys at International Truck had those. They made all my fixtures.

There always seems to be someone who thinks taking a measurement is the same as qualifying a measurement. Its still the same old accuracy vs precision argument. You can take a measurement with a 0.xxxx tool precisely just fine. Accuracy generally requires an order of magnitude finer resolution in the tool.

I had one micrometer I used exclusively in making bullets. I could split a tenth so that was 50 millionths. Used it every time I changed jackets or weights. Was that an accurate measurement? It was for me and would be damn close for anyone else in that application.
Accuracy would depend on measuring against a gauge block. You had a very precise mic that could reliably repeat measurements (and you as well). Its not hard to measure that small. It is a skill to be able to repeat the same measurement over and over.
