Muzzle brakes

Some brakes are better than others. I was shooting next to a guy who had a RPR and that stock brake was so loud I had to double up on ear protection and it was still loud. and this was outside.

None of the other rifles with brakes bothered me at all and this was a workshop, so a lot of people shooting close together and lots of braked rifles.

I was losing shots on the sighter plate all the time. My eyes are getting worse. The guys I shoot with all shoot brakes and wanted me to try a one. That was 2years ago and I don’t miss many shots anymore at 600 yards.

You have no choice after you've drawn for a bench...at least in rimfire.
You have the choice not to participate at all is what he may have meant. If there's a chance of a bad bench draw but you entered anyway, then roll with the punches or find different rules. Personally, I shun shooting with anyone in the same 640 acres as me, so competition and shooting ranges are out. I take my excellent portable bench out into the vast BLM sagebrush ocean just outside of town.

Double ear protection does not shield your face or much of your head. There's a pressure wave that inflicts a form of trauma and sound is transmitted through tissue to the inner ear. Ever have ultrasonic tooth cleaning? Rap the top of your skull with your knuckles and listen. One can develop a flinch even with perfect ear protection.

I shoot brakes on everything centerfire with the exception of my FTR rifles. To each their own. Please don't tell me how obnoxious my brakes are when I simply may not even like your looks. It's that simple!

I don't see the correlation between muzzle brakes and looks. If it is that "simple" for you, I feel sorry those who have to shoot in your presence.

I put a brake on a 6.5 Creedmoor simply because it came in the box with the rifle. I wouldn't have bought one separately. The thing is the rifle shoots better with it fitted than with a bare muzzle. Either way recoil is light so I doubt that's a factor. It must be doing something else to "tune" the barrel. It will be staying on. I will remove it every 2nd time I clean the rifle to get the carbon off the crown and brake and I'll get used to wearing plugs under my ear muffs. I'll let others know that its loud before I start shooting so they can do whatever they need to do such as use double hearing protection or leave.

Shot next to a 300 RUM with a brake. Got peppered by unburnt powder or carbon every shot. Not pleasant at all. Simply pushed away from bench when he fired then retake position and fire my shot. Have tried various brakes and found no real improvement other than noise level being higher. As far as needing one to see hits, never had a problem with follow through. Got buddies that swear by them but I see no need.
