Just wondering

I have not categorically left Alliant powders behind, prices are frightening and supply has been sketchy, so not a recipe for building a successful high precision load for my F - Open rifle. Currently I am using RL-23 and a fair amount for each cartridge, as replacement I have loaded some Magpro, VVN560 and VVN160 but none have given the velocity I am striving for (2780 - 2800fps) with my in possession 208gr ELD-M bullets. Now to the question to the collective knowledge here - Is VVN165 capable of the same velocity at approximate charge weights as the RL-23? If anyone feels there is not enough data, the rifle is chambered to
.30-06 using Kreiger #17 HV 28" screwed into a Defiance TENACITY long action.
I have one 8lb jug of RL-26 that is full and I am willing to use it all up but if availability and prices do not change, that will be all that I am going to patronize Alliant.
I also dabble in F-T/R using a .223 and have already abandoned Alliant powder with that round and gone to VVN540 for all mid range loads (600yd) using 80gr bullets.
So, if the question got lost in the noise - Is VVN165 capable of the same velocity at approximate charge weights as the RL-23?

N165 is slightly slower burn rate with RL23 and isn't as bulky. N165 doesn't have the energy potential of RL23 but is a very cool burning powder which could potentially extend the accurate barrel life.

7828 should definitely match or exceed RL23 velocity. It's just slightly slower burning than n165.

I'd try 7828 and n165 to see which one your barrel likes with the 208gr.

We all know that Hodgdon is paying attention to what Alliant is doing, so if your not buying now it will all more than likely cost as much at some point.

But... I've found alternate powders that work just as well, or better, for everything Alliant makes except RL26, & N565 may be that alternate. I have absolutely no reason to purchase Alliant powder at the current pricing. None. They may have shot themselves in the proverbial foot. Vista can suck eggs. Maybe Hodgdon will be watching that as well.

It's still surprising that H has such a near monopoly on powder. The gub'mint shut down Ma Bell. Phone service today is more $$ & of worse quality than it was in 1985. Can ya hear me now?

I agree with you. The worst part is I was starting to have a love affair with RL16.
