shifting POI - factory r700 223

is it normal to get abrupt changes in POI with a factory barrel?

my 223 shoots incredibly accurately and consistently when its clean and cold. sub half minute easy.

then after about 15 shots roughly (barrel is pretty warm/hot), i will watch the shots start grouping an inch high and right or an inch low and right, and will then stay there.

but the point is, this happens immediately, it doesn’t start walking over, it just immediately changes, almost like i made an adjustment on the scope.

i’m wondering if this is just the nature of a factory barrel with stresses, or something else that is causing it. whats your thoughts?

disclaimer: i do run a suppressor, a rather large one at that, but i do ensure that nothing loosened up when this happens.

You are going to have that with a warm barrel with that many rounds down it in a fast time frame. Unless you are competing id slow it down a bit.

yeah i’m not being friendly on the barrel, just doing some practice strings to get a little better with follow through and single feeding for my ELR guns.

I hate to rebarrel this thing because it shoots so awesome, i’m just tired of dealing with the abrupt POI shifts.

Nice to see a GRS stock - but, torque settings? I have a Bifrost and have found the torquing affects POI and I have increased from the factory recommendation by about 10 in//lb. My rifle is a Tikka, so different stock fitting, but....

You could practice with dummy rounds for the muscle memory drills. Or mix them in to reduce barrel heat.

Small changes in head position/pressure can move the POI around.

Lots of pieces bolted together. First thing I'd do is make sure every screw/bolt is sufficiently tight.

And that is "not" a factory rifle. Factory barreled action maybe.

And check your rings. The front and rear seem to be different, at least in the pic.

i never said factory rifle.

it’s done thec same thing now across 2 stocks, 2 scope mounts, and 2 scopes (i wasn’t trialing and error, just upgrading).

what do you mean the rings look different?

it’s 100% not my head position.

its been a while, but i went with whatever the factory recommended.

i should recheck the torque on them out of curiosity

Out of curiosity? Really . It should be normal practice before every outing . Things vibrate , remember the shock you’re putting the rifle through, the hot / cold cycles, expansion contraction . Check everything,

to answer your question, no, it's not normal, abrupt POI changes are usually an indicator of stress someplace in the assembly of the rifle or a defect in the scope

Does it still happen when you take that big ol thing off the barrel ?

That Pencil thin Barrel, with HUGE Suppressor = POI change, when HOT,.. showing, STRESS in Barrel ( IMO )
I have, a Factory Remington "Sporter" Barreled, .22-250 with, a Brake on it that, does NOT shift, POI
But,.. I try NOT to get it, real freakin' Hot !
I'd either, replace with a thicker diameter Barrel or, ditch the Suppressor, for better results
