Action and barrel length

Last question for the day.

I have amassed all the funds to put together an F open rig that I want.

Been thinking about barrel length. All comp shooting is going to be at 300 and in. I'll take it out to 500 rarely (absolute max.) 99 percent of shooting is at 1-300 yards.

Is a 30in straight 1.25 more beneficial at these ranges than say a 28in or even shorter? Or does it not matter? Making a decision tomorrow between a kauger brii and briii action. (Rem 700) Is a 30in barrel too much meat to hang off that without bedding infront of the action?

Thanks fellas,

What cartridge? For 600 or less a 28” would be fine. A 30” will build a little more speed easier or shoot at less pressure at the same speed. Good for brass and barrel life. Straight 32” barrels hang off 700’s all the time with no extra bedding..

My apologies. 6br. I figured, but wanted to double check.

Do you plan to seriously compete with this or just casual shooting from time to time.
You may come to reconsider after some time in actual competition on your desicions.
I would go to a Match and talk with the shooters before spending any money...just my 2c Sir.

There is a club by me, that I will compere at, but it's only 300 yards. Last time I went to see, only a complete fellas had actual f class set ups and they were beautiful. But way out of my price range. I have a bit of land though I like to shoot on a couple times a week is possible.

Zero disrespect meant here, but I keep hearing "do you compete?" What does that have to do with me being serious about accuracy, and wanting to be the absolute best that I can be at a sport?" I guess what im saying is, that I don't need, or really want validation, from others.

However, if I had an end goal it would be to obtain HM at 300/500 yard f open. So I'd need to go to competitions, and now we come full circle back to your question. Hahah

Kevin,
I believe that "Do you Compete" is asked because you experience a bunch of different ranges, the competition against others will drive you to higher goals (especially when you compare your shooting in the same conditions to others). That said,

For 300 yds and occasional 500 yds, the only way to go is a 6mm BR. You don't need a 32" truck axle for a bbl. especially if you are using a Rem. action. I would go with a 28-30" total length and something in a med or heavy Palma taper. That will give you the speed and balance you need for the distances you are shooting. Plus, the BR is very easy to load for and provides outstanding performance in a wide variety of bullet weights and powders.

This right here will work amazingly well. All I meant was once you get sucked in and start to Compete
your mindset changes on what is competitive. So please go and shoot some Matches and talk to some fellows to get more valid and practial advise than what can be offered here. ( No disrespect to anyone here )
You will get many answers to your questions, and you desipher what is valid, howerver ony you can answer
that is after a few matches....( No disrespect taken or given Sir )

This is why sometimes I hate typing responses. I meant no offense by it. @Sandstorm has given me some wise answers in my short time here. Perhaps subliminally, I don't want to compete because I'm gonna get smoked, haha. I'll definitely go for a barrel between 28-30.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I think I'll go with a 28". I already have a 26" bull barrel 6br prefit from NSS, in a KRG and its pretty front heavy and didnt balence well until I added length of pull spacer weights. Going to research the McMillan Kestros and try to find a weight on it and other things as well.

By the way Kevin...we all get smoked from time to time....Most shooters spend most of their
shooting learning the wind and getting smoked by it...lol
Its the great equilizer in this sport. I always hope for some wind because on a calm day you dont
shoot as consistent because there is the wind you cant see that plays with your impacts. Makes you think your out of tune.

Most of your shooting 300 yards & in with the occasional 500 yards.
If it were me, I'd be looking at 22". Maybe even a 20" barrel.

You don't need the extra velocity from a long barrel.
You also don't need the extra whip a long barrel is going to give you.

Keep it short & stiff.
According to the "Houston Warehouse Project", the optimal Barrel length is 21.75". I would call it 22". If you are shooting three hundred yards or less (mostly), what is the need for a long barrel? I would ask that question particularly if you are shooting short action cartridges and don't have a magnum case amount of powder to burn.

I may be wrong, but it seems logical to me.
