Not in my pencil weight barrelled Mod 7 ! < suppressed and with a 16x scope.New favorite 20P then 223, then 6br
Reason - 223 cases cheap to load and probably the cheapest to buy, relatively long barrel life, many reloads, tolerates long strings of fire better than most
What is your favorite
Smartest move I've made with a Model 7 is B P the action, re-barrel with a Hawk Hill 1 - 15 TW # 4 taper in 30BR and Mcmillan Hunters Edge Sporter stock by ODCR (WSMNUT) here on the site. Will get 3000 + FPS with the 125 gr. Nosler BT & AB @ 1/4 " MOA most of the time. Not in my pencil weight barrelled Mod 7 ! < suppressed and with a 16x scope.
Getting long in the tooth now and needs be rebarreled as it gets much more use than the 222, 6mm Rem, 7mm08 and 308. All shoot quite well for sporters with the 6mm Rem in Model 7 the most challenging with load development but still just better than 1 MOA < plenty good enough for small to medium deer and the lightest I use on such.
Really like the punch the 6mm Rem can provide in a full length setup and seen some amazing results from them in heavier barreled varmint rifles.....one chap here can produce 30mm (1.25") groups at 500 with 105gr Bergers.
Yet after fitting the moderator on 223 Mod 7 it became an absolute tack driver and provided many years of accuracy one would not expect from a pencil weight 18" barrel. I'd happily take rabbits with head shots to 150yds with impact points just a bullet diameter or 2 from point of aim. My son whom at that time was just embarking on his shooting carrer named it the (ad) Minister of Justice !Smartest move I've made with a Model 7 is B P the action, re-barrel with a Hawk Hill 1 - 15 TW # 4 taper in 30BR and Mcmillan Hunters Edge Sporter stock by ODCR (WSMNUT) here on the site. Sold my 284 Win custom build. Turned out heavier than I wanted. Too heavy to carry for hunting (for me),too light for a competition gun.
