Favorite barrel blanks and length question.

Building a 6br for f open. Thinking about going with a brux. Straight 1.25. at 30in.

Two questions.

What are your favorite barrel blanks, and any reason why?

If I'm only going out to 500 yards max, is a 30inch barrel overkill, or the longer the better? Figure it's just free velocity and less recoil.

Hi Kevin, My thoughts on your questions are as follows,
For length, I believe with a straight 6BR the max length runs about 28" as the powder charge is not big enough to built pressure after that?
Barrel brand, is a personal choice, I have had great luck with Kreigers, but that is just MY opinion! That thrown in with a couple of bucks might get you a cup of coffee!
I have been shooting 6BR's for about 12 years now & none of my rifles run a barrel longer than 26"
I wish you the very best in your adventure! The 6BR is a lot of fun to shoot!

I have used just about every premium brand blank around and I haven't found one that shoots any better than another. I think proper load development and loading technique does more than barrel brand. Just my experience. I am partial to Shilen and Krieger just because it seems I can find those a little more readily available in the configurations I am after. Whats funny is the most accurate rifle I ever built was was with a Green Mountain blank I bought from Midway on clearance for $99 bucks. Chambered in 6.5-06AI and thrown on and old Win 70 action in the original wood stock. That thing would stack 140 Bergers into itty bitty holes.

For a straight BR 27”-30” will be fine. You can go straight or 1” at the muzzle. Recoil isn’t an issue with the 6mm’s and I think the 1” muzzle on a 6mm balances better. Brux are one my preferred barrels but like Stomp said there are lots of good makers right now. I like 7.5” twist for versatility.

Thanks for the info! I have an elisio f class chassis coming from competition machine, but it won't be here for a other 3 months. It's around 6 pounds. Perhaps when he calls to finalize my order I'll ask him about what lengtha and weight would balance well in the chassis. I'll also, look at some old threads on here.

Good barrels....are where you find them. Of all the brands I’ve shot my two best were a 17 twist 30 cal Liilja and a 17T Shilen. I’ve never had a Krieger Bartlein Hart or Brux shoot as well. Good yes equal to those two, no. But I’ve never had another of those two shoot as well either.

Added...guess that's why shooters like Boyer bought 20 or 30 barrels a year searching for the one that shot their load, not good, but great.

Hmm good info and very surprised to hear

Unfortunately there is no one good answer to barrel length or maker. I have had many, many 6BR, or improved barrels over the last 20 years, mostly 1-8 twist for 600 yard competition. I have had barrels from 25.5-31 inches that shot lights out. That is: around 1.5 inch aggs. for 4- five shot groups (20 shots) in competition. And several different manufacturers. I have also had barrels in the same length and manufacture that I would not dare take to a match because I dont go to loose. You also need to take account of the max weight of your disciple and balance point of the rifle. But I can tell you that does not even matter if the barrel is a dud! Even with a good barrel you have to work up the load and find the bullet it likes. There is a lot to this game. No quick one answer to anything.
On that note: Jackie Schmidz did a barrel cut off test on a 6BR barrel years ago. In short, there WERE minimal gains after 28 inches. I have not shot a barrel over 28 inches in years. This experience is on a 17 pound LG. On a 22 pound F-Open rifle, a slightly longer barrel is not going to hurt you at all. Get all your components together and have your gunsmith weight and balance.

I have an Eliseo UMRS and went with the medium palam 26" for my 6BR, but I am shooting XTC. If it was prone only I would go a little larger profile.

I’ve never had a bad Krieger. I’ve had some other top barrels that I didn’t perform , but never a Kringer. That said The one bartlien 30 cal I had was a hammer.

I used 2 Lederer barrels 28" on a 6BRA and they both shot GREAT. I have one on a 30 Major that stays with my 6ppc ( which is no small feat ). I ordered 2 for the PPC and after many calls......nothing. I had no $ down so I just quit trying.........Bad barrels are kind of rare these days and " Hummers " are as rare as they ever were. The Lederer barrels borescoped beautifully.

Regards
Rick

I have a 28" 6BR fireforming barrel that delivers ~2920 with 105 Hybrids. My 30" match barrels are ~2955-2960 fps with the same load.
COOL, I learned something today! I was wrong as usual! I posted with MY response mostly to get the string rolling, no one else had responded to his questions yet, BUT, I am ALWAYS up to learn something! THANK YOU for correcting my info for Kevin, I dont shoot F-CLASS so your info for him will be better advice :)
