Cooper Firearms Classification Question

aaah...the word "custom" covers great gun smithing to home made i.e. meaningless. Usually used in gun shops for any model they don't recognise, especially British.

At my club, I bought a Cooper TRP in 6BR, they allowed it in factory class untill later that summer someone complained that they couldn't compete against that rifle! SO, I got bumped mid summer to custom class! trying to compete against 6ppc's & 30BR's, was able to " hold my own" but started getting beat pretty regularly,I argued that it was a factory class rifle, it was built in a factory using all their own parts! not a collection of components from all over the country, then assembled to produce a "custom" rifle!
It was certainly made with better parts than most of the "factory" rifles on the line, but in the end, I had to stay in the "custom" class, one of the 6ppc shooters told me, " that my rifle was NOT a custom rifle"
OH WELL!

I'd give it the old NASCAR ruling where so many of one type had
to be made for the public in a calendar year.

Do Cooper Firearms rifles fall under the Factory or Custom class?
I asked this exact same question at St Thomas more than 15 years ago. Thurman Finniff, who made all the rules although they weren't written down, originally said it would be factory. Once there's enough pissing and moaning about a gun being unbeatable there are a lot of ways to get it banned from factory:

- A new rule that it must be chambered for ammunition manufactured by the big three US companies, Winchester, Remington and Federal. This got rid of a pesky 223 AI that was winning a lot. It could shoot in factory class but only with non-AI ammo.

- Create a new class. The class a rifle goes in is determined by the range master and not open for discussion. This happened at a different venue when a very nice young lady did very well with a Savage LRPV (I think). She won a new Savage Benchrest or F Class rifle for her efforts. The new Super Stock class put an end to that.

- Just eliminate the class. There used to be a Deer Hunter class at St Thomas. 243 or larger, .680" or smaller barrel, limited scope magnification, etc. Three relays of three shots each at 200 yards. Someone showed up mid-year with little plastic stock Browning in .243 with a B.O.S.S. and it was unbeatable. It once shot an 89 out of a possible 90 and the nine was real close. The club did away with that class over the winter - problem solved.

I only remember one guy who shot a Cooper regularly at St Thomas. The gun was better than he was but it was chambered in 17 Remington which doesn't make a very big hole. At 400 yards he had no clue where they were going. No rule change required.

Some bodies say 5000/yr is the cutoff. Some say all parts made in house. Cooper uses wilson barrels. Although they are owned by wilson cooper doesnt make their own barrels

It is what it is. Factory is the toughest class to police and set rules for that everyone can agree on..for the most part and it can be the most expensive class, if someone actually plans to compete at the top of the class. That's because you can spend a lot of money buying and selling factory rifles before you stumble upon a truly good one.

JMHO, but we need a factory class and it should be promoted, along with rules that allow most anyone to bring their factory rifle to a match and get involved in the sport before dropping $5k on a new build just to try the game. UBR has a pretty strong factory class group of shooters and many who started there have stayed in it and moved up after building or buying better equipment.

We can't fuss about attendance if we make it hard for new people to even try it.

So my Sako A1 6ppc will be just fine until I win....
As far as I know, UBR factory class rules are the same today as they were when UBR started. There are a few Sakos in UBR that do well. Club rules can easily change with the wind but a sanctioning body should be nimble enough to change rules if needed but should also be able to offer a consistent and stable set of rules. That's one of the biggest benefits of a sanctioned match.

If it’s anything like their pistols then the new Coopers should be pretty darn good. I don’t see Nighthawk messing that one up.
And my reason behind the remark was noting more than wondering if Coopers will be mass produced or custom ordered.
We had a shooter at our club's BR bring a Cooper. We let him shoot for a while and he was always the winner of Factory class. One day I happened to notice the engraving on the barrel was not exactly right. Turned out the rifle had been shipped in a different caliber and a newer more custom massaged barrel had been installed. That was the end of it.

What? You mean the Wilson was not competitive? Shirley you can't be serious?

That reminds me of the old line: If your not cheating, your not trying.
