Yep, not a squirrel rifle to walk all day with. Had mine out shooting at 50 tonight. Wind will not give up. Most 5 shot groups about an inch, had one just over a 1/2. The pellet that is second best indoors at 25 seems to be the best outdoors at 50 right now. Took a guess and shoot at a 100yd dinger. Got lucky, hit it first shot. Fun gun.I had an RWS 54. It shot well, but man it was a heavy beast to carry around.
That's a helluva good shooting springer!! I spent some time yesterday in the late afternoon shooting my Origin 22 at 50 and 75 yds. My wind was switchy @3-5 mph. I can normally get five shot groups in the 3's and 4's @50 on calm days but yesterday I struggled to get 3/4". Went out to 75 on steel and my groups really opened up. Nearly all horizontal. If my wind flags (surveyors tape) got up at all, I was putting 2 mils hold on to get a good hit. I would normally run slugs at 75 and beyond but I'm out till the UPS man shows up. 21 gn pellets are a FUN challenge beyond 50 yards : OYep, not a squirrel rifle to walk all day with. It sure is a bunch of fun to grab and shoot without all the support equipment needed and travel associated with "going to the range". Although, I have the luxury of shooting in my backyard with subsonic, suppressed powder burners. I too have had many groups with four out of five in one hole (high 1's low 2's) but one pellet out makes the group average under half inch at 50. I often wonder if I would have done better if I weight sorted or "rolled" the pellets first, if the fliers would have been culled out. I just can't bring myself to sorting, thinking that it would take the fun out of airgunin' ; )Dan, they sure are fun without all the additional work of powder burners. In a long life of shooting I have saved 3 groups. Two with my current PPC that are a very low zero. One with my 30BR shot at 200 yrs in wildly blowing snow 2 years ago at a winter bench match that's .139. When I get a 50 yard .3 with a Springer, it will join them. It will happen. My best group last night in the wind had 4 in a slightly oblong hole and one a half inch low. We are hoping to hold our first 25 and 50 yard outdoor match this coming Tuesday if the weatherman cooperates.
I tried weight sorting at 25 yards and could see no difference. With all the pitfalls in shooting a Springer accurately I think lack of sorting pellets is the least of my potential problems. Its all about good bench manners and follow through. I did shoot one of my best 25 yard groups with the Diana 54 today. If you look real hard you can tell its not a perfect round hole. I did not measure it but it will be in the zeros. It sure is a bunch of fun to grab and shoot without all the support equipment needed and travel associated with "going to the range".
