Set-tru chuck?

The two and two design, makes indicating 5 groove Bartlein ppc barrels interesting
It must be a spatial thinking thing but when I used to use my 6 jaw Bison set-tru with copper wire I didn’t have any thought or trouble at all when dialing in 5R’s. I just did it??? Same with front and rear spiders that aren’t indexed/aligned together.

Might also be that I had done plenty of machining well before I did any gunsmithing so already had my head wrapped around the concepts?

I know what he's saying... you can't align the grooves with the jaws/set-true bolts. Small adjustments... keep going in circles until it's right. I don't bother with aligning the grooves to my jaws..

It seems where I need to make an adjustment is in the larger gap, sometime it takes a while and sometimes it doesn’t, my frustrations is the fine adjustments are not quiet enough to get that extra .0001-.0003, sometimes it just won’t go that extra little bit.

lots of good info guys, thanks a bunch, I can feel my groups shrinking, lol.

With swivel tips!

(I sure wish these were available in fine thread)

Oh man!
Those are neat!
I considered a ball/sockets arrangement with a set screw and brass end.
Would not be too difficult to make.

Yeah. I found these too late. All of my jigs and chucks are fine thread... if I were starting fresh I'd plan on using these.

I never even thought about trying to align grooves with jaws. I just put the barrel in and go to work dialing it in. Even though it is individual lands and grooves I still treat it as a circle, an interrupted circle but still a circle.

I just pulled a 13.75 Hawk Hill out of the lathe two days ago, that was my number 18, so I got a little to go yet.

Those swivel tips look sweet, should be an easy swap and stronger than my brass screws, for the tail stock. That HH barrel was 22” and could run with my jaws on but I’ve had best luck out of 20.25-20.5”, that’s where I gotta trim the fat. I only do ppc barrels, that’s all I shoot.

Four jaw with nine gauge copper wire around what I'm working on. No problems bending work or dialing in zero
