I had a case separate today which was a first. It’s starline brass bumped back 2-3 thou depending on what day it is, and this was the 4th firing. Many out of the 100 I started with shows a faint line outside on the body where it snapped. Anyways I anneal after every firing. 223 cases. I have seen ( not through personal experiences) the case head separate from over sizing and I have had split necks and I have had primers get blown out but not so much this. Helps. +++EDIT+++ I’ll also add I can not feel anything inside the cases where the line is forming with a paper clip. 94 out of the 100 has the obvious line around the outside of the case. 6 doesn’timage.jpg

It can split from overworking brass, but can also be caused by overpressure. Whats ur load data? Powder and charge and what bullet and seating depth?

It’s a warm load, mostly shot at 23.2gr of ar comp. Or could have had 24gr of varget topped off with a 69smk. Jammed .010 into the lands. 1.910 cbto. I would have thought the primer pockets would been the first to go. I’d like to add many on here have looked at my primers during development and didn’t see any possible pressure.

Starline had a bad batch of brass in 2021 that realized was bad and were replacing. Bad annealing at the factory if I remember correctly. This may be a possibility.

A buddy has tried 75 eldm loaded to 2.260 with a stout load from someone elses load data in his ruger precision rifle. He was splitting cases 1 in about 20. Told him wrong bullet and use ur own load data. I'd try backing load down and see how it goes.

Is there a chance you are over annealing ?
Too hot down the body?
I’d say yea there’s a chance of it. I point middle of flame on the neck shoulder junction. I have never had it happen on 22/250 or 65 grendel cases that I have annealed, My anneal line doesn’t go down as far as the where the case separated for sure

Well Well Well

I have had the exact same thing just happen to me 223 Starline brass, same spot.
I bump the shoulder .001-.002 so its not a resizing issue.

The OP has a newly rebarreled Savage .223. Using the same FL die as the original chamber. I believe there is now a die/ chamber mismatch causing this.

It’s the same die yes. But I did adjust it for the new barrel.

Oh really. This was the 4th firing. I seen the lime on a few cases prior to but I took it as a mark from sizing

Darn, you guys are scaring me. I just bought 200 pcs of this same brass to add into my cycle. I'm hoping this is something from an older batch/ lot # that has already been addressed...

Me too! I have 1600 pieces that I'm converting to 20VT. I bought Starline based on the reviews and the fact that I have had multiple case head separations from once fired converted LC bought from one of the brass companies. Mine was purchased in 2022 so I hope they had this fixed by then.
