.223 Rem coyote bullet

What would be a good bullet for killin' eastern coyotes out to 300 yards max?

The barrel is 20" long & has a 1 in 9" twist & I don't care about saving pelts.

60 Vmax in an 8" twist Tikka is hell on predators but all my experience so far is under 200 yards and with foxes with this bullet.

Taken a few yotes with the 55 Nosler BT, 12" twist rifles, and it worked fine but the distances were under 300 yards, the furthest, if my memory is correct was about 250 yards. Like you I'm not concerned with the pelts - this bullet is not pelt friendly.

Sierra 52gr match bullet.
This bullet has always shot well for me, from a 12 twist all the way down to 7 twist barrels, where V-max bullets (for one reason or another) are not nearly as universal. I can't make them shoot as good as I have been able to shoot these 52's. Nothing against Hornady.

We don’t have coyotes in Australia but judging that size animal I would use the 55gr Sierra gameking soft btsp or 55gr nosler BT in that twist rate. For red fox we use slightly more explosive bullets 40-55gr, I’m using the 53 vmax, 55gr tnt and 40gr nosler BT. But they really aren’t constructed all that stoutly.

What critters are you using them on down there?

Nothing I have shot coyotes with puts them down faster and more dramatically than the 40 gr Nosler BT. That’s with the 223. In the 220 Swift, that 55 gr Nosler BT has always been my favorite.

Since these days I can’t be sure if the coyotes or pigs will show up, I moved to the 65 gr Sierra GK in the 223. That’ll work for both

Red fox and kangaroos. Since kangaroos must be head shots it’s why we look for a more stout bullet. The 55gr Sierra gameking btsp is a good bullet for kangaroos but for foxes it’s a bit too hard. Any of the ballistic tips work well for foxes. The 55 nosler BT having the solid base goes through bone better if being used for kangaroos. They are pretty expensive here though, over 70c per bullet
