44 mag lever action and 300gr cast bullets

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a load out of my 20" lever action with a 300gr cast bullets doing 1,200 - 1,300 fps

The bullets are cast truncated cone, no gas check and with BHN 15.4, rated 19,100 PSI by the maker.

Powders I have are Unique, 2400, H110, Lil'gun, Viht N105 and N110.

There are what I think are some promising loads in the Lyman manual but they only quote a 300gr bullet in pistol length barrels.

For this I'm not worried about single loading and I have some 44 special cases I could also use if there is data that would work.

Pistol loads should be perfectly safe in a rifle. Remember that pistol loads fired in a rifle can gain (safely) 100 to 300 fps by virtue of the additional barrel length depending on powder.

Hi @SSL

Thanks, I'm aware they'll be safe, just more for the speed as I have a range of MV's in mind

(In Europe we hunt driven boar, sometimes with slugs. Slugs tend to have quite a slow muzzle velocity of about 1,300 fps which means they need a bit of lead. We have ranges and shooting cinemas with running boar targets but, these tend not to allow you to use shotgun slugs. I have a .44 mag lever so thinking that with a red dot will have the same sight picture as my slug gun that also has a red dot mounted on it).

Running the starting charge weight for pistol with the 300gr 429640 Lyman bullet from Lyman #4 cast manual through Quickload shows, in a 20" barrel rifle, 14.0gr 2400 to have a predicted velocity of 1287fps.

Thanks Phil, very helpful!

I must admit I was thinking 2400 or I can get hold of Lovex DO60 (Accurate 5744 equivalent and I think sold by shooters world as Buffalo).

I have a programme called Gordon's Reloading Tool but it isn't so good for more US focussed powders. Great for European stuff though.
