Model 742 bolt

Can anyone tell me if a Remington model 742 30.06 bolt and bolt carrier is different from one in 308 Winchester.
Thanks.

I think they are the same. Looking at my old Rem. factory parts list (Sept. '80), the only parts that are listed for the shorter cartridges are the action bar assembly, the barrel take down nut and the magazine. All other parts have only 1 catalog number. Of course the barrel is obviously different, but they don't list a PN for that since they were not sold as parts.

Thanks.
I've been mechanically restoring my Dad's 30.06. I disassemble, cleaned and lubed all parts. I lightened the trigger pull to 1.25 lb. Pulled the gas block orifice set screw and machined a shank on a longer set screw, now it has an adjustable gas block!

Everything is 100% functional with zero malfunctions, shot a 1 moa eight shot group at 200 last week. Which is amazing considering the mess the rifle was in when I inherited it.

I found a bolt available but was listed as 308 win. I'm just getting replacement parts for the future. There never will be an new parts made...ever .

I want to harvest some deer with may dad's rifle.

It is an adventure. A few times I actually said " I wish dad would have just bought a M1 Garand", lol.

But, as a kid I was always fascinated with my dads 30.06.

I fully restored my dads 742 30-06. He and i both have killed a ton with it and its never jammed once. Its the only one ive ever seen with no checkering on the grip and a corncob forend. He was disappointed that i restored it because he bought it wore out, but he understands why i did it. Same with his fully restored model 11 remington shotgun
