Fastest Wildcats

About 40 years ago I had a .17/223 that I used Lee Precision 20 gr bullets in. Don't have the load data any more but I am pretty sure it was near 5K with a max load.

I ran into a guy at Surematch that had a 6mm-Lapua. He did ever say his velocity but he was shooting Matchkings...for whitetail deer!?!
I'm guessing close to 4100.

There’s been mention of some ultra high velocity rounds that never had acceptable accuracy. The fastest one that I’ve had my hands on, that would really shoot, is a 22 Creedmoor shooting some 52 grain bullets that I made. It would make 4175 and shoot sub .2 groups. That thing was hell on coyote hides.

I built a 6mm mach 4 based on a 7mm rem mag akly shoulder. It was fast but never achieved what others had experienced.
things that must be taken into account are the difference in equipment, components, and conditions for each rifle and cartridge.

That is just to start, follow all that with your risk tolerance and actual understanding of reloading. Most of these cartridges are at the extremely far end of a bell curve. When you go that far , fast and coming apart are way to close together for me.

Remember we are all names and words on the internet. Take everything in with grace and a big old grain of salt.

The 17 Remington does 4900 fps with the copper 15.5 gr bullet, and I didn't have the powder that gives it more velocity. So 5000 fps or very close to might be possible with a standard light weight hunting rifle caliber. I didn'thave the correct powder to push it... velocity as related to burning powder expansion is limited as ithe expanding gas only hits 6000 fps pushing no bullet, with conventional gun powders available.

I had a 17-222mag that would push a .17 cal 20 grain to 5,083. It shot at the speed of thought but barrel fouling was a major issue.

I’m running a 22-250AI at 4870 fps with 35 grain hammer hunter and IMR 8208 XBR. It shoots from the low .2s to upper .4s when I do my job.
Mine shot accurate with 55gr and 45.2gr of W760...4,064....no pressure. 40* shoulder.

Running 17-223AI accuracy load 21gr HH @ 4550. PDog hunt last summer 18gr @ 4925. Got it up to 5060 FPS during load development over 1.25MOA. Going Tx Coyote hunting end of month.
