Is Acra Glass gel still hated

I wouldn't say it's hated. But things evolve and there are much better alternatives to it, now. My 2 cents worth.....

Good shootin' -Al

P.S. Due to the Nylon in it, it's perfect for one thing I work on.
What is it perfect for?

I've done five or six rifles with it and can't complain in any way shape or form (Hunting rifles).

It was about 40 years ago that I learned it was degraded by Hoppes #9 (so was Devcon steel), so I never used it again. The original Acraglas (the messy liquid stuff) was less affected by Hoppes. WH

I have used Acra Glass gel for all my rifles it does a good job. I don’t bed rifles enough to justify the cost Devcon or marine Tex so I’ll keep on using it. I also use bore guides on all my rifles.

I found both forms of Acraglass to be pretty soft. Even following the destructions & letting it cure for 2 days.

I only use Devcon now.

When I started bedding rifles, over fifty years ago, I didn't just work on precision stuff. I worked on a lot of rough use rifles. The owners of these were not always all that careful about where solvents or oils ended up, so it was a real concern. The original Acraglas was very good. So was Bisonite and so was Belzona. Devcon made a bunch of different products and I tried most of them, at one time or another. I tried the Acraglas Gel when it first came out and disliked it. The formula was changed after a few years and it seemed better but it still wouldn't take Hoppes (maybe it was the nitrobenzene). WH

I bedded my last rifle with PC-7
Which is a 2 part epoxy, I don't use Hoppes so I cant comment on that part.
The PC-7 is extremely thick but is workable for over an hour. It can be a bit messy but when cured is very solid.

Acraglas is not a bad compound as far as hardness and longevity goes. Most of us hate it because it is the absolute worst product to work with. Sticks like hell to everythin, spreads across surfaces about as good as frozen butter, and it’s nearly impossible to do a full action bedding job without getting bubbles and voids of some sort.

Devcon and marine Tex are much easier to use and produce a much more professional looking bedding job on the first try.

I agree that there are better products for bedding competition or heavily used stocks. But I still like the Acraglas for bedding stocks like hunting stocks or custom stocks where color matters. I can tint it to sorta match walnut or black plastic. I don't care for black or gray color on a walnut stock.

I tried a lot of different compounds when I started out, Acra Glass & Gel, Devcon and Marine-Tex etc.
Now I only use JB-Weld with paste wax as a release agent. JB has a tensile strength of 5k pounds and heat resistance to 550*F, it colors well with Brownell Dyes and if you need it to be more runny you can just add a little acetone and it will flow better. Also it's nice to be able to pick it up almost anywhere.

What JB Weld do you use?
