30-06 to 7mm question

30-06 to 280AI will result in a short neck, and I assume standard 280 would be worse as the 280 has about .046 more case length.

I looked into the same as I was interested in a 280AI, but the scarcity of good brass and inability to use 30-06 cases has me looking at other plans.
No AI's have to many now i love them but i have three if them now and thats enough fireforming for me

Just do a regular 280 chamber. You can use 270 Winchester brass since it's the same length as 280. Or just neck down the '06 brass in a 280 die to make a false shoulder and fireform (if you're intent on using Lapua brass). That .046" difference in the case length won't amount to a hill of beans in your shooting performance. You may have a little more carbon buildup there between the case mouth and the throat, but every rifle has that to some extent.
How much of a differance between a 270 and 280 case

Peterson started making 280 Rem brass.

Keep an eye on Grafs & Euro Optic for availability.

I have a Ruger 77 MKII in 280 Rem.
I've used 120,140,150gr Ballistic Tips on whitetail with good success.
Also the 140gr Berger VLD & 150gr Nosler ABLR.

Longest shot on deer with the 280 was 392 yards with 140gr Berger VLD.
Deer made it 10 yards.

Shot a 200-250lb black bear at 172 yards with a 140gr Ballistic Tip. Rolled the bear, literally!
Problem was me.
Hit it high & back. Tracked 1.5 miles to the den.
Found out later that after shooting 600 & 800 yards i forgot to reset zero in the scope.

A 270 is a longer case length than 30-06, like the 280. However the 270 doesn’t have the shoulder blown forward like the 280. if getting a custom reamer, you can use 270 or 30-06 brass and neck it to 7mm. I would recommend the 30-06 brass, and get a 30-06 bushing die. Then you can run a smaller bushing, and not have to buy a custom sizing die.

I know peterson makes it but its a once every 2 or 3year thing with them. I have them on speed dial and only live about an hour 20 from them

Now that im think in about it i like the 270 or 06 brass. Thers alot of it out ther and dont have to rely on the boutique brass makers to make 280 brass when ever.

I've shot 280 Rem since 2009 and form it from 30-06LC brass. Love the cartridge, can easily push 180 Hybrids at 2920fps can get it into the low 3000s but that is just added recoil. To go from -06 to 280 you are pushing the shoulder forward 0.050". I sent my reamer print to Hornady and they made me a hydraulic forming die. Blows the shoulder out enough and then when I fire it, that crisps up the shoulder. The false shoulder method of fire forming was about 60-70% effective. The .280 neck is actually quite long as the case itself is longer than the .30-06. This was done so it would not chamber in the -06.

One year at Perry 2012 or 13 guy on our team shot a 280AI and I shot a 280. He forgot ammo so we fired some of my ammo in his rifle. Shot the exact same elevation as his ammo. He blew the shoulders out on my brass to AI. Brought the brass home reszied it and fired it more. Some of the cases I'm using are the original cases from 09. So I was getting a lot of reloads on them. After necking down I'd turn the brass to .013". I have enough 06 LC match brass that I have a lifetime supply at the rate I go through the brass.

Powder wise I started with 4831SC in 09/10. Mid way through 10 switched to H1000 and shot that till last year when I made a switch to N165 mid way through the 22 season.

Remington did release a 7-30-06 that was necked to 7mm this I believe was called the 7mm Remington Express and was different to the 280.

I've made 280 brass from 270 brass on several occasions. The operation I have followed is this: Neck size 270 brass with a .338 sizer, form a false shoulder with a 280 Rem die, load a middling load for whatever weight bullet you can get cheap, fireform. With the price of powder and bullets these days its a drain. It has produced very usuable brass tho.

I rebarreled a 30-06 using a Preferred Barrel pre-fit on a Howa 1500 to 280 AI. It's shoots right @ 1/3" using Barnes 150 TTSX @ 3000+ fps. Thats exceeding 7mm Rem Magnum Barnes 150ttsx Vortex. I've been shooting Nosler Brass and anneal after every firing. So far I've got 6 reloads per case and the brass looks and specs great.
It an outstanding caliber.

Im glad your having good luck with nosler brass i wrecked nosler 223 primer pockets with two reloads some only lasted one reload these were only middle power plinking loads to

I thought the difference between 7mm Express and 280 Rem was the twist rates of the barrels in the Remington rifles.

Just double checked you are correct. Not sure where I got that mixed up. Will say the 280 is an often overlooked cartridge. The extra space you have with the shoulder being forward lets you use slower powder and get to velocities the straight 284 cant.

The whole reason I went 280 was I loved the 7mm 175SMK in my 7mmWSM, and I had a ton of surplus LC -06 brass. Have not been disapointed.

That's only because they are underloading the 7mm Rem mags. My 7mm Rm mag shoot 3362 with 71.5 gr of H4841SC, 140's over 3400. Re22 will do the same. Waiting on warmer weather to start working g with Re26.

How much performance loss would ther be if i just necked down 30-06 to 7mm? Would it be major or minor? Was just curious because of the 280 being longer to shoulder. How many grains less would ther be
. Back in the day a Gun Writer did his 1st 6.5-06 and he just based it off his 264 Win Mag Die and the Gunsmith did a chamber to match. Moral? I guess is if your going Mild Wildcat you might as well have a standard Die in the mix to keep things somewhat Standardized. (even though I think they went 30* in the chamber) KISS

Its easy to take 30-06 to 280.....run lubed fired 30-06 case through a 30-06 FL die or Redding body die to resize the 30-06 case body...Then a 280 FL die, .....But just stop about .050" short on the 280 FL sizing die on 30-06 brass... start out about a full turn out from bottom of the die to shell holder position and keep moving the 280 FL die down slowly until the bolt in your 280 rifle closes (in the turn 3/4 out from the shell holder area) with "resistance", there will be a small .30 caliber step up from 280 to stop the 30-06 case .050" out...but will be blown forward when firing in your 280 chamber.
The newly formed case Overall length will be a little short....measure it. But the actual "usuable" case capacity of the newly blown out case will the same as 280 brass depending on the brand of case you use...like WIn, Rem, Hornady, Military, LC, etc 30-06 brass, all have different case capacities to begin with.
