50 Grain .224" Speer Varmint Bullet Performance

NETim

Curmudgeon-at-large
I have a few of these on hand for use in my .223, primarily for prairie dog shooting. What kind of performance can I expect out of them, expansion wise? I've used Hornady SPSX's for years and regard them as a great prairie dog bullet due to their explosive expansion characteristics. (They open up readily on the little critters and offer reduced chances for ricochets etc.)

I'm beginning to think I should have bought the Speer TNT's but in these times, I'm happy to get what I can.

Thanks!

I have shot a few hogs {in the 150 lb range } with them . Head shots . They never moved a inch. Tommy Mc

I test bullets I intend to use on prairie dogs on grapefruit. I find that if it blows up a grapefruit, it blows up a PD. If it pencil holes the grapefruit, it is worthless on a PD.

And I don't like grapefruit anyway.

I stop using the TNT's over 10 years ago since they tended to ricochet. Also, accuracy was good but not great in my 12" twist bolt rifles.

I've tried a bunch of different bullets in several of my 223 bolt rifles over the years and I found that the Sierra Blitz, Nosler Ballistic Tip, and Hornady Vmax gave me the best accuracy and terminal performance.

I found the 40 grain and the 50 grain Speer Varmint bullet very low BC and a very hard pill ok in a 22 250 out to 200 yards but in a 222 223 just not enough velocity to make them blow like I like I Varmint Bullet to do just my opinion.
