204 Ruger

Is it a "Born Again" cartridge? Seems everywhere you look for bullets and brass they are out of stock. A couple of years ago you couldn't give a 204R away. Today you can't find components other than really light weight stuff that very few people use in the 204R. Like a fool, I sold all my brass, but did keep my dies. A friend gave me 50 pieces of brass and I found some 32 grain V-Max. I've looked on line and seems everything is Out of Stock. I kinda understand no bullets as there are many 20 cal variants but don't really understand the brass shortage. Maybe I'm behind the times??????

Brass has been gone since beginning of 2020. I use 35gr bergers. I have heard that most manufactures were stoping 20 cal production for a bit to catch up on other calibers

I went to the big Tulsa gun show a month ago with shopping lists from 2 of my buddies (and me) for reloading stuff. None of the big reloading suppliers were there. A dealer friend from Kansas I know came over to my table with 2 boxes of 204 bullets so I snagged them. That was my big buy that weekend.

I can still find vmax projectiles locally no problem. Think right around $20/100
The sierras or bergers bullets I can’t find

I would call Randy at BIB if you want something more accurate. I just settle for shooting in the .2's with the Vmax.

I think I have a little Winchester brass around here somewhere. It’s left over from a larger batch that I purchased here on the forum a few years ago. If you’re interested shoot me a pm for details. I’ll make you a deal.

It is simple economics. The manufacturer of brass and bullets concentrate on making what the distributors / dealers want, which is the item that sells the most and quickest. There is a lot more demand for 22 caliber bullets and brass than 204. No good business man is going to have his dollars tied up in an inventory with low demand.

What world were you living in where you couldn’t “give away” a 204 Ruger!?

The 204R cartridge never died. Yeah sure people try wildcatting different 20 cals but they always compare any wildcat performance in reference to the 204 Ruger because it is the benchmark and was the first commercially available 20 cal cartridge that started it all. I’ve never had any problems selling any 204 Ruger components pretty much instantly in classified ads so never saw any signs of death to the 204R from where I’ve been standing.

Fortunately I live in the same world as you but in Oklahoma. Seems no one wanted the 204 a few years back. Your area may be different. I'm at my gun club 2-3 days a week, sometimes more and I'm the only one I've seen shooting a 204 in a long time.

It is a niche cartridge, not large enough(legally in most places) to have the versatility of medium/large game use. Not as cheap to shoot as the 223. But does have a reputation for accuracy, flat trajectory, low recoil and wow factor on small critters.

Here in eastern Oregon with vast fields of alfalfa, you'll see the 204 as often as anything else engaging the very hungry ground squirrels. In my crew of six, five all shoot 204's in addition to other calibers. So I'd say the 204 is going strong, at least in this neck o-the woods.

And with Nosler right here, .20 cal bullets are not an issue either, as they always seem to have both firsts and seconds available.

No 204 Ruger, but l do have a 20TAC. 20cal boolits don't seem hard to find unless you're wanting to shoot Berger or Sierra.
Speaking of 204Ruger brass--l got some new unfired 222Rem brass on the CHEAP. Turned out being ''222 MAG R-P'' brass. l hear these make great 204Ruger brass.

I just saw 250 pieces 204 Ruger, NIB Nosler brass for sale on Rim Fire Central in the Ammo for sale section. Add was dated late November 2022 and had no responses.
