Honing Redding Type S Die Body

You can with a tight fitting bore mop and buffing compound chucked in a drill. I think the die hardening is only a couple thousands deep so go slow, it might seem like nothing is happening and then oh shit! Measure a fired case protrusion and check it often as you go. You can trim the mop with scissors to get a nice tight fit.

If it’s a caliber that Harrell’s offers, I’d buy one of theirs based on your dimensional needs.

The elasticity of brass changes over it's life span. In a VERY PERFECT world you need -.003" on the FL die vs the chamber. That -.003" can't be smaller than your brass. Better to have a larger chamber and match the die to the chamber rather than match the chamber to the brass. That just causes problems and wastes money chasing an incurable problem.
Oh you will not have any luck honing out that dies.

That is why I have a reamer spec ed to .002 smaller at the shoulder and .003 smaller at the web. I make my own sizing die. You will run into problems having a die with dimensions the same as your chamber.

Here is what I have. This is a .222 Remington (my reamer design).

Shoulder: 0.3583 (reamer) vs 0.3550 sized brass
0.2" from BF: 0.376 (reamer) vs 0.375 sized brass

The brass was sized in a Redding Type S bushing die with the shoulder bumped 0.0015"

That's pretty dang close to good. Yes, maybe a little heavy but not bad. It'll be tough to polish the shoulder/body junction well and the back end doesn't need much at all. You might slick it up a little but I'd probably live with it if it were mine.

I honed my Redding grendel dies with a flapper I made with very fine sandpaper.
I think it was a good thing.
Yes...Redding's engineers made the Grendel die a tad smaller a few years ago. Probably for AR function but it's still good imo. I'd rather work brass a tad too much as opposed to not have enough sizing. Bolt click doesn't always show up until you have several firings on the brass. I despise click and/or hard lift.

I was getting the shiny ring near the base of the case and had one case separation. I trashed a set of brass faster than I thought I should.
I think less working of the brass at the bottom will be a good thing for my bolt gun. I have not tested it yet, but I think I did a good thing.
