Norma Brass Flash Hole Burr?…Nope

Killick

Transcendental Capitalist
After reading Bryan Litz’s chapter on the effect of burrs in the flash hole on SD;
“The results to this point clearly show that if you have brass with punched flash holes you can see a dramatic reduction in SD by deburring.”
I had to know if my Norma .284 Win cases needed deburring. I sacrificed a virgin to the gods of accuracy to find out. They honored my gift to them with a resounding “NOOOOOO!” Not only do they not require deburring, they are ever so lightly beveled.

Same RP case hit lightly with .250 x 60 degree cutter.

But, there is a huge burr there, yes?

I debur all the cases I buy or pickup. Have removed some burrs from every brand available that I have obtained. Some just less than others. Just a good step in prepping brass, for my use and reloading.

Could have sworn I read somewhere that you DON'T want a bevel around the flash hole - something to do with creating a "funnel" for the gas to push back through the flash hole - but that may have been graffiti on some public toilet wall...?

Probably someone writing about Bernoulli’s theorem. Nonetheless you don’t want a burr. The object is to remove the burr not to keep turning and cutting to create a funnel or to change the angle of one should it exist. The variables then are endless and your chance of consistency is zero so you’ve possibly created a problem where none existed.
A light spin and a burrr is gone. Not a big deal and done once. I have found burr’s to possibly be present in many makes of brass. That includes the highly touted Lapua. Someone claimed they drill their flash holes. I don’t know, have no intention of ever visiting their factories, and don’t care if they shoot it in with a laser beam. I prep my brass all the same and I’ve not found a make that shot smaller groups consistently than another. Someone (?) said their not shipping anymore to the USA. I’m fine with that.

They do not drill them. No mfr currently drills flash holes.

I didn’t say they DID. “Someone claimed” is what I posted. It is of no interest to me how any manufacturer does their flash holes. Certainly would want it centered!

I was doing some Federal case with my Redding tool that has a shoulder to cut only so deep. Some of those cases felt like they had a doorstop of a burr on them, had to hold the case head with soft jaw pliers to grip it enough.
