6mm creedmoor barrel life

Hi
I'm currently in Vet School in South Africa and I am looking to purchase a a 6mm rifle
The most cost effective here is a howa 1500 in 6mm creedmoor, my question is that if I load the creedmoor with a slow power like N160 to get 6 br like velocities ( 2950 with 105gr) it will be about 10k psi less pressure than a BR with a faster burning powder (varget) at the same velocity
Would this not tremendous improve the barrel life of the 6mm creedmoor

Tremendously? I doubt it.

It's still going to take 43.5 'ish grains of N160 to make that velocity. Max pressure is reached just under 45 gains, at 3050 fps.

If you want BR barrel life, get a BR. Then you can burn ~30 grains of powder and not over 40.

I shoot a 6 Creedmoor built on a Bartlein barrel. At right on 2k rounds I thought it was toast. Decided to scrub it til it was shinier than new and see what happened. Good things for sure!
Have lost about 50FPS from new but accuracy is as good as ever. I shoot 105 Hybrids and RL16 powder.
As for how long a Howa barrel will last the only way to know is just do it. Steel is steel but not all steel for barrels is the same alloy. I've worn chrome moly factory barrels in 243 out in under 1000 rounds.

I'd honestly love to get a BR
But in south africa it take longer than year to get a license for a barrel
You can go custom but thats 2000 usd +
Or you can buy an action license it
Buy a barrel license it both would take a year
Permission to build the gun and license it
Another year so 2-3 years

Run it for accuracy, not duration. Don't get it hot. Keep it clean.
Alternatively, get a 308, it will last longer. Look after it and should should be good for a year or two ( or 3)

Barrel life has alot of factors. I have a 6MM Remington running at 65,000 PSI. I shoot 75 grain VMAX at 3,900 FPS. I chuck and crow hunt with it and shoot it 50 or 100 times a year maybe. I got nearly 20 years out if the first barrel. It's never rapid fired.

If long life is the goal I'd pick a cartridge that operates at 55,000 PSI or less with a small capacity. In AR or bolt you could go 6MM ARC, 6.5 Grendel and load factory pressures and control your rate of fire. I'd expect up to 4,000 to 5,000 rounds.

I've see very expensive rifles ruined on the first day at the range.

And I thought the Canadians were tough.

I have no experience with the 6 creedmoor but considering the ballistics closely resemble a 243, albeit with a few grains less powder and higher pressure, I would assume barrel life would be similar

So you need a license to rebarrel a rifle?
Maybe you should consider a caliber with better barrel life like a 6.5mm or 7mm-08.

I run, a 6XC Varmint / Target, Rifle ( the Kissin' Cousin to, the 6 Creed ) with, N-160 But have only put, a couple Hundred round's, thru it, so far.
YES,.. N-160 is, a great Powder choice and you will probably get, around 1,800 min to, 2,000 rounds of accurate, barrel Life,.. IF, you don't Run it too,. Hot, on pressure / Velocity and Clean it,.. carefully.
Don't lose any sleep over your Choice of Powders as IT's, "Good chit" for most uses and probably will get you, the BEST, barrel Life, possible ( N-160 is also, a VERY good choice for, .243 Win's ).
I've NOT seen, any real Studies on how many, "Extra Shots" of barrel Life you could get with, N-160 but, My "guess" would be, an extra, 100 to 200 shots approx. at, "Reasonable" Velocities ( just "Back it Down", a Few, FPS ! )
Like, Capt Obvious,.. N-160, IS also, My Choice in both, the 6 XC and My .243 Win
Good Luck and,.. have Fun !

I have had 2 6mm creedmoor rifles one started throwing fliers at around 1700 rounds this was a Ruger precision rifle OEM barrel, the other was a Bergara premier barrel that at 1750 rounds would still shoot between .355 and .420 and hammer at 1000 yards.

The second rifle started shooting bad so I pulled the barrel off only to find that both rear base screws had sheared. So the barrel is still most likely good but I am having another barrel made in 25 creedmoor.

I was running 105gr bullets at 3150 FPS then backed the load down to 3060 FPS to try to extend barrel life.
During hot summer days that 6mm creed barrel gets HOT fast.

Sounds to me like the citizens need to use those barrels for something other than shooting game.

Try some N550 I use it in my 6xc it loves it
It models well in QuickLoad for my 6cm as well with 39 gr pushing the 108 ELD-M at a COL of 2.806 (-20) looking pretty good for the lower node but the case fill is only 88%. At ~51k psi, it shouldn't be too hard on the barrel, I'd think

Hoot

This is an older thread but I’m just seeing it. I too have a 6 creed, w a proof barrel (Bartlien was the other choice, basically flipped a coin). The main thing people have to remember about these cat rounds (I also have a 220 swift & a 22C ) that burn em up quickly… is what they’re used for. I only take mine to hunt with. And not popping prairie dogs by the hundreds. So after zeroing w whatever glass, can, etc… I may only pull the trigger on each 30-40 times. A season. So ? Barrels last a loooong time. If bought for a range thumper, 200 round a day gun, they chose the wrong platform. Point is the whole barrel burn up thing is a bit overblown when used for specific purposes. Just my .2
